NaBloWriMo - Witchy Wednesday 5 - Samhain

For my last Witchy Wednesday I’m writing a post about one of the major Sabbaths, Samhain

Samhain  (SOW – WIN) is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter and has often been called the Celtic New Year.  Though popularized and celebrated by children around the world as a day to get scared and get candy, Samhain is a very important religious/spiritual holiday for many Pagans.

Some Samhain customs include bonfires, turnip lanterns and leaving food out for any relatives that may return to visit on the night where the veil between the living and dead is thinnest.

The wearing of costumes and staying close to home were ways in which humans could “guise” or ward off harmful spirits. Sometimes totems or little trinkets were use to assist in this warding.

Honoring those that have passed and making a fresh start are typical events for Samhain.  Including divination, spell casting and contact with the dead are popular. Putting out offerings such as soul cakes or whiskey are popular. When adding my offerings to the Goddess Hecate I set out Leeks, Garlic, Honey, mushrooms and sometimes a bit of wine.

To me, Samhain holds three very important meetings.  One, celebrating new things to come and sweeping out the old year are key in my rituals.

Photo credit - Renee Olson - Hecate Altar

Secondly, my ancestor altar is one of my prized possessions.  I have it set up on a 100 year old server that my grandmother gave me.  It’s adorned with photos of those family members whose energy I would like to pull back into my home.

Photo credit - Renee Olson - Ancestor Altar
Finally, my husband and I had our hand fasting ceremony on Samhain.  This year is our 10 year anniversary and we plan to renew our commitment to each other. I talk about our hand fasting in the Samhain's Sirens' Blog Extravaganza which is being published today.  There will be a giveaway of a hand fasting cord.  A hand fasting cord is an elaborate or very simple rope or cord that is tied around the wrists in a sign of commitment.

Photo Credit - Renee Olson - Hand Fasting Cord

Not every Pagan celebrates Samhain, and some non-pagans do.  It’s a really great time of the year when Mother Earth changes her robes from the bright summer colors and bundles up in her whites and grays to watch the seeds and earth rest for the winter.  The snow and ice come in and freeze the ground welcoming Yule and slowly the wheel continues to turn.

Photo Credit - Renee Olson - Wheel of the Year

For me, the wheel of the year is a magical thing and showing it off in your home or office when you can is a wonderful way to remember the seasons and how much our ancestors relied on this wheel for their very survival.
Photo Credit Renee Olson - Wheel of the Year

As we sit in the aftermath of the devastation of the natural disaster, Hurricane Sandy we have to remember but we are just a tiny speck on this great big planet and we need to remember that this earth is our mother and as such we should respect and honor her throughout the entire wheel.

Pagan Blog Project 2013 - S is for S

This week for my S post, I had several that I wanted to do.  They were all promo type pieces and fairly short.  Which to pick?  What should I do?  I know, combine them all!  So for my post on S, my S is for S.  Have a look at all these S’s in my life.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Stew Chef Button
The Sunday Stew
My first S is the Sunday Stew.  Formatted and presented by Kallan Kennedy on her blog – The Secret Life of the American Witch, the Sunday Stew is published weekly on each Sunday of the month with special Sabbath Editions following the wheel of the year.

The Sunday Stew is a wholesome serving of life experiences from an eclectic group of Chefs.  Like getting a three card reading from a dear friend, the Sunday Stew offers a look at the past through the Pagan Lore; a look at today with the Pagan News and a look at the future with the Astrology section.

Look for the Mabon Edition coming out September 22nd and if you’re interested in contributing to the Stew email Kallan Kennedy for more information.

Samhain's Sirens Button
The Samhain’s Sirens Blog Extravaganza
My second S is the Samhain’s Sirens Blog Extravaganza.  This is the second year I have participated in the Samhain’s Sirens Blog.  It consists of a full month of wonderment beginning October 1st and ending on Samhain, the 31st.  This year the event is being hosted by the lovely Serena Siren.  She will be announcing updates on her Facebook Page and welcomes new friends.
Serena has created a Blog page on Facebook that will provide updates on the new posts as well as any *extra* special editions to the blogging.  The extravaganza will consist of bloggers from all over the internet with each day ending with a special giveaway.  The blogs will be published on the Samhain’s Sirens blog page found on Blogger.

I will be hosting the Saturday Craft-Tacular again this year, offering an assortment of crafts with easy step by step instructions.  Each one ending with a chance to win the featured craft.
Be sure to head over and *like* the Samhain’s Sirens Facebook Page & follow the blog on blogger so you don’t miss any of the fun.

                                                      Sosanna’s Closet
My third S is for Sosanna’s Closet.  My own shop that I created out of my home just a little over two years ago.  With the assistance of my soul mate, I take my wonderful creations around to different events in Eastern/Central NC and Southern VA.

My goal for the shop was to offer quality products at a reasonable price.  For the last year I've been creating clay statues as well as protection masks and pendants out of natural wet clay and polymer clay.

Protection Mask by Renee Olson

We offer altar supplies that don’t come from a big chain.  Each one individually made, each spell written by me and not copied from a book.  From the Juniper berries to the grave yard dirt, each ingredient comes from one specified source and when possible my own property.

Patchouli Oil - Renee Olson
Ritual Bath Soaks - Renee Olson
In addition to the retail part of the shop, I also conduct a dark moon ritual monthly where offerings to the Goddess Hecate are presented at the crossroads.  I accept energy requests, blessings and ceremonial magic for protection, prosperity and cleansing at no charge.

On both this blog and on the web page I have information on energy requests.  My Facebook page lists new products before they are added to the webpage.  So for a sneak peek at my new items head over and *like* my page.

So that’s it.  These are a few of the S’s currently in my life.  I hope you've enjoyed this look at some of things I really enjoy working on.
Until next week

Connecting with the Ancestors - A Samhain Reading

Fall is my favorite time of the year. October is of course the best month as I feel more connected to, not only my witchiness but also to my ancestors. I love working with the dead more now than ever before in my life. As I begin to connect more with my Crone energy, I feel as though I am able to work better with the dead.  I sometimes start with an update to my ancestor altar.

Ancestor Altar

Samhain is traditionally the time of the year for working with the dead. This is the time of the year when the veil between the living and the dead is thinnest, allowing us to make contact and work with them directly.

Me, Renee Olson & My Grandmother, Julia Smith
Julia Smith & Renee Olson

The last ten years has been a real change for me as I lost my grandmother and a dear aunt that I was very close to. These are the energies I call on when I do my work with the dead. There is a strength there and a love that each had that resonates with me as I do my spell work. With intent and focus I call their energies into the room and look to them for information, answers or just energy to guide me through my work.

I look to Samhain as my new year. I treat it much the same way others treat January 1st. I take this time to shake off the old energies and connect with the new. I cut ties and begin new ventures. In recent years I've started doing a special oracle reading to help me get started for the new year.  I'd like to share this year's reading with you.

1. Past - What you've learned - The Direction Guardian tells us to choose our path. We look in all directions and evaluate our options. We trust our instincts to take us down the right path.

2. Past - What you've lost - The Summer card tells us to bask in the joy and light.  The world is a little less bright right now. The joy seems to have faded.

3. The Present - The Shaman tells us to trust in higher forces. Look within to find that inspiration, that force or energy to push forward.

4. Future - What you'll learn - The Snake tells us to shed old skin. Don't be tied down to things simply because it is the way its always been done.  You are not your job, your race or your religion. Change can be good.

5. Future - What you'll gain - The Magick Guardian tells us to unlock the magick within. We should look within ourselves for this is where the magick is.  Cards, wands and robes do not, the witch make. You are the magick. Own it.

I hope you've enjoyed this reading. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions, leave comments if you'd like.  I have also added a message button to this page. You can click that and I'll respond as quickly as I can.

I hope you all have a save and blessed Samhain.

October Happenings & Samhain Giveaways

I love love love October. The end of the year is rolling around the leaves are beginning to change. There's a slight crispness to the air. It's my favorite time of the year.

I love the smells of fireplaces beginning to burn and oh yeah, SAMHAIN! It's my favorite holiday, with Beltane bringing in a close second. This was the day hubby and I had our hand-fasting and the day we recognize our anniversary. This year will be nine years together! Truly a magical time of the year.

I love October for another reason. YES! Blog giveaways! Currently there are several blog giveaways going on and I'd like to highlight two.

First we have Kallan over at The Secret Life of the American Working Witch. She has started the first of her Samhain giveaways with a wreath from me, at "Sosanna's Closet" and a protection pouch. Kallan sent me a protection pouch a while back and these are great to have around. My was specially created for me and I still have it today. It's awesome. I won't be entering this round of the contest, but I know she's also going to have more stuff and I can't wait to see what's next!

The next giveaway that looks amazing is over at Mrs. B's Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom. I've entered to win a couple of her giveaways before, however this one looks really awesome. The book she's giving away is "The Witches Book of the Dead". I've been having quite a bit of spiritual activity lately and I'd love to see what this books has to say on the subject. I've tried some divination work to try to see what's here, but I'm not having much luck. Maybe I'll win this one!

There are some other events going on like the "Get off Your Broom Fitness Challenge" over at "The Domestic Pagan" and "The Real Witches of Halloween" at WitchBlog.

Overall a great way to head into the holiday season, wish me luck on my entries this season, hopefully I'll get some treats!

Halloween - Takes a beating...

So every year I read article after article on how local churchs "hate" halloween.  On how they create "Judgement Houses" to show kids what happens to them after they commit "sins" and don't repent.  Every year I hear about how Satanist have used Halloween to pull good christians into bad situations.

POPPYCOCK!

From History.com (LINK)

Halloween, celebrated each year on October 31, is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic  and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended together over time to create the holiday we know today. Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity and life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can return to the earth, and ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts. The Celtic holiday of Samhain, the Catholic Hallowmas period of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day and the Roman festival of Feralia all influenced the modern holiday of Halloween. In the 19th century, Halloween began to lose its religious connotation, becoming a more secular community-based children's holiday. Although the superstitions and beliefs surrounding Halloween may have evolved over the years, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people can still look forward to parades, costumes and sweet treats to usher in the winter season.

From History.com (LINK)

Ancient Origins of Halloween
Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

Basically the holiday was stolen and turned into something else.  Much like Ostara (Easter) and Yule (Christmas).  It really pisses me off when people cast stones at something they know nothing about.  Be educated before you start making wild accusations.

NaBloWriMo - Saturday Craft-Tactular - 4

Today is the 27th of October.  Every Saturday this month I have sent you on a magical journey over to the Samhain's Sirens Blog to see my entries for the Amazing Craft-tactular!!  Today is my final entry for the project. It's been a amazing ride.  In just a few days the Sirens will be announcing the grand prize winner.

For today's craft I wanted to share with you a really nifty project.  A few years ago I found a  cute little poem about a Christmas spider.

I've read many different versions some use Santa and others use Jesus.  Some say the legend originated in Germany and this is a summary of my favorite.

An elderly lady who was very poor was getting her house ready for the holidays.  Each morning she cleaned her house and dusted the spider webs from her tree. The spiders would come in at night and see the lovely webs removed from the tree and spend the whole night covering the tree with the lovely glistening strands of silk.  On Christmas morning she woke early and stood by her tree and sobbed because of all the spider web on her tree.  (Some use Jesus here, or Santa) But a magical being appeared and saw her heart break, but also so the love and energy that those tiny little spiders put into making the tree beautiful.  That being changed all the spider web to tinsel  and that's why today people still put tinsel on a tree.

This little story always make me tear up.  A wonderful holiday a gift is a copy of this German folktale and one of these lovely Crystal Spider to help others see that there is beauty in all things.

So for this final Craft-Tacular head over to the Samhain's Sirens' blog and learn to make this great crystal spider and register to win the one below!    You can use fancy beads or plain ones, this is a great craft to share with kids.

Pagan Blog Project – W is for Wreath

W is for Wreath

1. Something intertwined or arranged in a circular shape: as
a : a band of intertwined flowers or leaves worn as a mark of honor or victory
      : garland <a laurel wreath>
b : a decorative arrangement of foliage or flowers on a circular base <a Christmas wreath>
2. Something having a circular or coiling form <a wreath of smoke>

The history of the wreath is pretty interesting.  Wreaths originated in ancient Greece and Rome where members of that society would hand make ring shaped wreaths out of leaves, twigs and flowers.  These wreaths would we worn on the head and would usually represent the wearers position or status in the society.  Laurel wreaths were used to crown the winners of the Olympic Games.  The word wreath comes from the Greek word diadema which means a thing bound around.

Today we have wreaths all year around, but traditionally wreaths were kept for Christmas.  There’s even a school of thought that says that Christians invented wreaths 1,000 years before Christ was born as a way to show the struggle of life through the winter months.

A quick search on Google will give you all sorts of wreaths.  From pine to dried willow wreaths can and are used to celebrate each of the seasonal holidays around the world.  Personally I prefer to have multipurpose wreaths that can do dual duty when it comes time to decorating.  And I've been known to dabble a bit in wreath making.  So when I get the itching for a new wreath I simply open up my closet and Voila!  New wreaths abound.

To date I've had several special order wreaths, which I gladly pack and ship around the US.

One of my Samhain Wreaths graces the doorstep at Mermaid Mansion and is owned by the lovely Mermaid Morrigan.

Known for her deep love of everything “Wreath” I've even had several of my lovely wreaths end up in the humble abode of the lovely Kallan Kennedy.

(Notice the Spider in Steeler colors)

A few of my favorite wreaths include this wonderful idea I had of a wreath that covers the entire year.  So looking at this photo you can see that my “Wheel of the Year” wreath actually starts at Yule on the top of the wheel and circles all the way around, stopping on each season with a flower, decoration or fruit that represents that particular season.

I've got some with skulls for Samhain and Sunflowers for Litha, I've even got small butterflies and buttercups for Imbolc.  I always recycle my wreaths so each is made from parts of other wreaths or flower arrangements in order to help lessen our carbon foot print on this wonderful planet.

So in a way, my wreaths are not only circles abound or show the wheel of our seasons circling around them, they also represent our need to recycle, and re-purpose items in order to keep this lovely Earth a healthy happy place for us to live.

Here are a few of my other wreaths that I've created.

Making Magic - Moon Water

Photo Credit - Renee Sosanna Olson

Moon water is really as simple as it sounds. Water exposed to a particular phase of the moon. I have a collection of different waters that I use for assorted spell intentions or components.  Filled with positive energy, some believe drinking moon water will help ease symptoms of PCOS and help regulate menstrual cycle.

Moon water can also be used for ritual bathing before or after magical rites or used to cleanse crystals or stones of the negative energy that have collected. Choose certain phases of the moon or certain astrological settings of the moon is said to enhance the water's properties. If a moon is conjunct with Jupiter, it could bring luck and abundance.

Alternatively, putting it in a spray bottle with a bit of sage or basil can turn it into a lovely cleansing spray. Adding lemon can brighten up any space.

Cloudly sky with moonshine
Full Moon Storm by Renee Sosanna Olson

I'm sure you're asking.. well what other types of waters can I make? Well, my friends, the options are as endless as the velvety nights sky. Aside for the obvious lunar phase and astrological choices for moon water collection, there are always eclipses, convergences and times of the year. A bottle of water when the moon is in a one house would one type of energy whereas when it is in another, another would be captured. Yule water or Samhain water could be used for different sprays -  Yule with cinnamon as a pray or Samhain with eggshells or tea leaves for communing with the dead.

Now think about the possibilities, Storm water, Hurricane water, Ice water/Winter water. Each one of these having their own magical properties to help enhance your magical efforts. I have put together a short list below.

  • Moon Water - Feminine Energy, Healing, Cleansing
  • Sun Water - Masculine Energy, Strength, Growth
  • Storm Water - Banishing, Cleansing, Protecting
  • Moon in a Fire Sign - Passion
  • Moon in an Earth Sign - Grounding
  • Moon in an Air Sign - Intellect
  • Moon in a Water Sign - Intuition
Storing your various water types can be a challenge. To keep moon water fully charged for example, you'll need to store it in a closed container in a dark space. It can be pulled out and poured into a glass for drinking or in a bowl to add to a bath but the container must be put back in a dark space and exposed to as little sunlight as possible.  Some even create unique bottles to store their ritual water. Here is a bottle I created for my moon water.

Using these types of water in your rituals will enhance your magical energy and the outcomes of your magic. Just be sure to collect the type of water you need, store it properly and the take care with cleansings your crystals or other fragile items.

Moon water will help you bring the goddess energy into your magical workings and daily life.

Hail Illinois!

First of all HAPPY SAMHAIN!!! Today is one of my two favorite holidays. I love Samhain. The only other that comes close is Beltane. I love this time of the year. It's a bit colder than normal for this area but the leaves are falling; there is the smell of wood fires in the air. I just love it. And it's my anniversary. Nine years ago tonight, hubby and I had our hand-fasting at the rose garden in Balboa Park in San Diego. I'm looking forward to many many more years, my love. Happy anniversary.

Puppies, Rescues and the Day of Rememberance.

So so much going on this month.  I told you it was my favorite month.  My eight year anniversary is fast approaching.  I've ended up having to move my mother this coming weekend so any hopes of going off for our anniversary are pretty much out the window.

We added a new female to our pack over the last 2 weeks.  She's doing wonderful.  Hopefully she'll give us great puppies.  We had to spay our smallest female as she was just too tiny to have babies.  I helped rehome some GSDs this last week as well.  Hopefully they all ended up at the rescue safe and sound.

I can't stand working with rescues. They are all so holier than than thou and they spend so much time deciding why I can't have a dog that they end up losing more than they actually help.  Not to mention, they required that the owner spay/neuter the dog before they take it.  So really what are they doing for the 300.00 they charge for a dog?  The dog is vetted and healthy when they get it. So they really do nothing. Maybe we should stop calling them rescues and start calling them brokers.

Next month is when Transgender Day of Rememberance is.  It's always a very sad sad time.  I wanted to share the link so that if you're in an area that has any type of gathering you might be able to attend.

I'm extremely excited about Samhain this year.  My husband and I have decided to renew our vows.  We were married 8 years ago in Balboa Park's Rose Garden in San Diego CA on Samhain.  This time our vows will be renewed in our own back yard.  I love him dearly and thank all the energies that led me to him.

I'll begin this review with the physical book.  The review copy I received is a hard cover book but did not have a dust jacket.  The image on the front shows assorted religious emblems and is a very vibrant raised image on cover.  The art inside is illustrative art and lends itself nicely to the context of the book.  There is no index in this book but the table of contents is pretty extensive.

The chapters are broken down by month and include an assortment of rituals and blessings that correspond.  January, for example has new year's blessings and directional invocations while September offers  prayers for Rosh Hashanah, Mabon  and a Honey Blessing Jar project.

As in many of her other books, the author provides a clear and concise delivery of the information within the pages. The chapters begin with a brief overview of each month which includes a brief history or explanation of that rites within.

The October chapter provides a brief look at Samhain (Summer's End in Gaelic) and how the Celts may have celebrated this new year.  The author gives us several rituals and a project associated with the celebration of the dead. Creating an ancestor altar has been one of my yearly traditional for quite some time.

I really enjoyed the diversity included in this book.  While reading up on Samhain I was delighted to find a section on Diwali.  Diwali is Sanskrit for light or lamp.  Its an ancient Hindu festival celebrated at the New Moon in October.

The blessing begins:

On this new moon,
we remember light's victory over darkness.
Diyas glow like treasures,
thunderous sounds boom triumphantly
illuminating the night with color and sound
Now is the time to delight in celebration.
Lakshmi, I honor you on this day.
Thank you for blessing us with your abundance.

Over all, this book is well organized, and provides a well rounded bit of information from an assortment of cultures. Including projects with each chapter provides the reader the opportunity to not only read about rituals they may not have heard about, but also the ability to put them into practice as well.   I believe this is a great book to have on your self to compliment an extensive religious text collection or to introduce yourself to new paths you may have otherwise missed.
