Pagan Blog Project 2013 - N is for Name

N is for Name

Many articles, posts and discussions have been held on the art of selecting a magical name.  Some choose the characteristics they’d like to claim or maybe some they already have.  For example, if a person chooses an animal, perhaps the word eagle as part of their name, we can assume they are trying to adopt some of the qualities of the bird.  Perhaps strength, power or mental alertness can be attributed to the bird.

Sometimes words are taken from other languages to give a bit of elegance to the name.  Arne for example is Scandinavian for eagle.  Akylas from the Greek and Ander from Old Norse, for the word eagle.

Picking a magical name is often part of the path for those starting in some of the different paths of Paganism.  At any given pagan event there are bound to be tons of people with the names Morrighan, Pendragon and Gaia.

For many years I played several online role play games.  In these magical worlds I could create a sorcerer to control the magical arts or a druid that would call upon the forces of nature to do its biding.  More often than not I created a druid.  This character would have the ability to summon rain at will, to command lightning bolts to destroy enemies.  She would summon hordes of locust or vines from the ground forcing them to grow up and control her very environment.

Sitting in the apartment of a dear friend, we thumbed through a character naming book.  I found a name that intrigued me.  Sosanna.  The name was from the traditional Gaelic and was said to mean “Lily”.  I loved it.  I took it as my magical name and added the title “Belladonna - The Nightshade”.   Little did I know some 26 years later, I would be a devotee of the Goddess Hecate; who is said to be liked with belladonna.

Today I feel very comfortable with my magical name choice.  Many choose names and rename themselves several times throughout their lifetime.  This name has stuck with me and I cherish it.

NaBloWriMo - Monday Memories 4 – Buying a House

Ten years ago this month I met and fell in love with my amazing hubby; we started on what we called our five year plan.  Our plan was that we would own our own home within that time frame.  By year two we were both unemployed due to layoffs in our industry and we were just trying to make ends meet.

We had a kid to get out of high school and get into college as well as a budding boxer business to get off the ground.  With each door that closes another opens, and we ended up in a position that would allow us to continue to assist with the kid’s education but also allow us to move to the east coast.

November 2005 we drove to the Cliffs of the Neuse State Park and saw this view:

By the end of the year we were all moved in.  I did several turn and burn plane rides to bring Sheba, Duchess and the kid to NC. We had seasons!

Sosanna's Closet

Over the last few months I've been thinking about what I'd like to do with my life.  Yes, one of those, there's no grandbabies so what am I going to do with my retirement.  Granted I'm only 42 years old, and retirement is still a really LONG way away, still it's been in my mind.

Last month hubby and I chatted and I said, you know, I'd really like to work for myself.  Be my own boss.  Get a little store front and open a shop where I could sell stuff that I like.  Pagan stuff, metaphysical stuff, candles, skulls and the like.   I think having our little booth at the Earth Day Event at Truely Unique in Wilson really nailed it for me.  We made over 100.00 with some little things that I tossed together.  I was really pleased with that.

He said ok let's do it.  So I went down and registered my business name.  I've been using Sosanna's Closet for a while on Etsy, Facebook and on my web page and figured, what the hell.  I registered Sosanna's Closet.  This week I've spent some time on two tasks.  One, review web hosting plans and find the best deal for my money and two, prayer beads.

The first was pretty straight forward, I would prefer to get my domain name included as well as not having a host that shoots elephants in his off time.  :)   The prayer beads were a bit more challenging.  I've been looking into them for a while and found that many pagan's use these.  I've not used them myself however, I do have to save they are absolutely gorgeous!

So I tried my hand at making a few sets over the weekend.  They turned out amazing!  I added a few to the website and to the esty shop as well as adding the new elemental boxes.  I've posted some photos here for you to enjoy.

I'm now reaching out to my blog followers and those that see me on Facebook or Twitter.  Sosanna's Closet has her own Twitter Account and Facebook Page.  We'd love to have new friends, likes and followers.  If you have the time head over and check us out.
