All Wired Up

Over the last few months I've been dabbling in wire wrapping.  I started with basics, doing some simple rings.  I made quite a few rings for a local show and sold a large number of them.  I even had a few folks order custom rings on the spot.

I currently have a couple for sale on my Etsy Shop and my Facebook Page - Shopping Tab.

I then moved on to learning to wrap stones and glass in such a way that didn't appear that copper wire had vomited on them.

I've even started working on creating some of my own designs.  I'm working on several right now.  I have a rainbow/chakra beaded pendant.

Pagan Blog Project 2013 - W is for Witch's Way

Recently a friend on Facebook shared a link to a blog post referencing how witches are portrayed today.  The post seemed to feel that today’s witch has been bastardized from its roots and turned into a caricature of the ideology from witch it originates.  (Link to article)

As I read through the piece, I couldn't help but feel the angst of the writer.  I can relate to the feeling of concern about what is currently happening to the craft.  Pop culture has long loved the witch.  From bed time stories, to the big screen the world loves to hate the witch.  With the popularity of American Horror Story : Coven and the way it has embraced pop icon Stevie Nicks, who was rumored for years to be a Wiccan; as a modern witch, I can say that these types of shows do little to shed any real light on what a witch’s way really is.

Everyone is very quick to say, if you don’t follow the Wheel of the Year, you’re not a real witch.  If you’re not following a specific path, then you’re not a real witch.  If you wear a pointy hat, you’re shaming the witch.

Really?

While I don’t agree that, AHS – Coven is a true representation of witches today, I do believe that the diversity they’re showing in the witches is actually pretty accurate.  The gifts of the witches range from healing, seeing, immolation as well as the typical mind reading.  In the real world, we have tarot readers, spiritual consultants and healers.

My path is from a slightly different area than most.  My deity was pulled into modern Wiccan practices and given the title of “Crone”.  Many follow her as this aspect of the Triple Goddess.  I do not follow that because historically there is no evidence that Hecate was ever depicted as anything other than a young woman.  I don’t believe that their path in any way has an effect on mine.

Just as I don’t believe that my introduction of “Modern Witch-ware” in the form of hats and cloaks, make fun of or takes any power from my practice.  I don’t believe that wearing a conical hat turns me into a cartoon nor do I believe it weakens my spell work in any way.  Looking at the pages out there today, most believe that witches should be pissed off and loaded with black eyeliner.

I’m of the belief that the witch’s way, differ from person to person.  We each have our own way.  I believe in helping others and I believe in justice.  My path is one of taking care of others, fostering animals and being a counselor to those that need it.  I do spell work for fertility, healing and jobs.  I offer crystal magic and study the texts related to my path with diligence.  I send out protection amulets and talismans to protect others from harm.  I cast monthly rites to protect my home and to pay homage to the Goddess Hecate
I don’t need to have the world fear me.  Fear breeds hate.  I don’t need to be that renegade that rides the road of terror in my community.  I want to be that wise woman that offers support and protection.  I do not believe for a second that there is any specific color magic.  There is only magic.
The article in question goes on to state that they -

“Will not sit at the communion table with pagans and ‘witches’ who break bread with the very people who have sought the demise of my kind for centuries.”

I understand what the author is saying here.  Sometimes I find myself at odds with pagans who are members of Unitarian Churches for example.  However, to me witches are magic practitioners much like a Magus or Magi, which was basically defined as a priest of ancient Persia in Magic in the Ancient World by Fritz Graf.  To me, that means that a magi, one who practices magic (a witch) is basically one who is trained in the ways of the Gods.

Over the years many groups have been the victim of abuse by those in power.  Be they Christian or Roman, those in power take the belongings, the powers and the spirit of those below them.  Pagans were no different.  I have many different titles.  Each of those titles has a group that opposes them.  I can’t throw out all of humanity because of a few people that may have persecuted people like me in the past.

Historically a witch’s way has been a tough row to hoe.  We have to remember that in the past, the label of witch was thrown upon any one who had something someone else wanted to take. Most of those that were tried and sentenced as witch’s, regardless of what AHS might lead you to believe, were not actually witches.  Women, who were typically midwives and keepers of the herbal knowledge and lore were often blamed when a child was lost in child birth or if there was a death in the village.  Quickly the association between being a witch and an old hag - woman was made and the rest, as they say is history.

To me, the take away from this is that as I said in the beginning, each witch has their own way. Some maybe those who walk in both worlds; they walk the line as an ambassador between the witch and the rest of the religions.  Others may be the magi, the alchemist who honors the craft directly and avoids the pageantry that sometimes accompanies it.  Some may be filled with light and love, so much so they are referred to as “Fluffy Bunnies”.

When I sit to make my meal for Hecate’s Supper, I have many ingredients.  I use what’s seasonal and local to my area.  My meal may consist of leaks and garlic, perhaps cakes and wine.  Another’s meal may have figs and honey.  One meal is not better than the other.  Each is honoring the Goddess.  My offerings of garlic differ from the sacrifices of the black dogs and bulls of antiquity but they are not frowned upon.
My desire to harm none, does not make me a weak witch, instead I believe it makes me strong.  As a light bringer, Hecate was considered the holder of secret knowledge and from the crossroads waited to provide answers to those in search.  Hecate is called upon in many cases to curse others, including a recent find on a lead tablet found in Israel dating back 1700 years.  Does this put my desire to harm none, be at odds with my Goddess?  Is she this darkness referred to by the author that has been “watered down” any a sweet little old lady?

No.

However, there’s a big difference being strong and being a bully.  There’s a difference between defending yourself and picking a fight.
To me, I don’t need the world to cower before me.  I don’t need to see other turn away from my gaze for fear of the evil eye.  I don’t need my small town to believe that a rash of fires or some other hardship is the fault of the town witch.

I would much rather open a dialog with them and be someone who practices their craft, but is approachable.  Someone who is honorable.  Someone who believes that there is always time to reach out to someone and provide a helping hand.  This isn’t weakness or white-washing.  I call it “This Witch’s Way”

In Her Illuminated Light,
Sosanna

Pagan Blog Project 2013 - S is for S

This week for my S post, I had several that I wanted to do.  They were all promo type pieces and fairly short.  Which to pick?  What should I do?  I know, combine them all!  So for my post on S, my S is for S.  Have a look at all these S’s in my life.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Stew Chef Button
The Sunday Stew
My first S is the Sunday Stew.  Formatted and presented by Kallan Kennedy on her blog – The Secret Life of the American Witch, the Sunday Stew is published weekly on each Sunday of the month with special Sabbath Editions following the wheel of the year.

The Sunday Stew is a wholesome serving of life experiences from an eclectic group of Chefs.  Like getting a three card reading from a dear friend, the Sunday Stew offers a look at the past through the Pagan Lore; a look at today with the Pagan News and a look at the future with the Astrology section.

Look for the Mabon Edition coming out September 22nd and if you’re interested in contributing to the Stew email Kallan Kennedy for more information.

Samhain's Sirens Button
The Samhain’s Sirens Blog Extravaganza
My second S is the Samhain’s Sirens Blog Extravaganza.  This is the second year I have participated in the Samhain’s Sirens Blog.  It consists of a full month of wonderment beginning October 1st and ending on Samhain, the 31st.  This year the event is being hosted by the lovely Serena Siren.  She will be announcing updates on her Facebook Page and welcomes new friends.
Serena has created a Blog page on Facebook that will provide updates on the new posts as well as any *extra* special editions to the blogging.  The extravaganza will consist of bloggers from all over the internet with each day ending with a special giveaway.  The blogs will be published on the Samhain’s Sirens blog page found on Blogger.

I will be hosting the Saturday Craft-Tacular again this year, offering an assortment of crafts with easy step by step instructions.  Each one ending with a chance to win the featured craft.
Be sure to head over and *like* the Samhain’s Sirens Facebook Page & follow the blog on blogger so you don’t miss any of the fun.

                                                      Sosanna’s Closet
My third S is for Sosanna’s Closet.  My own shop that I created out of my home just a little over two years ago.  With the assistance of my soul mate, I take my wonderful creations around to different events in Eastern/Central NC and Southern VA.

My goal for the shop was to offer quality products at a reasonable price.  For the last year I've been creating clay statues as well as protection masks and pendants out of natural wet clay and polymer clay.

Protection Mask by Renee Olson

We offer altar supplies that don’t come from a big chain.  Each one individually made, each spell written by me and not copied from a book.  From the Juniper berries to the grave yard dirt, each ingredient comes from one specified source and when possible my own property.

Patchouli Oil - Renee Olson
Ritual Bath Soaks - Renee Olson
In addition to the retail part of the shop, I also conduct a dark moon ritual monthly where offerings to the Goddess Hecate are presented at the crossroads.  I accept energy requests, blessings and ceremonial magic for protection, prosperity and cleansing at no charge.

On both this blog and on the web page I have information on energy requests.  My Facebook page lists new products before they are added to the webpage.  So for a sneak peek at my new items head over and *like* my page.

So that’s it.  These are a few of the S’s currently in my life.  I hope you've enjoyed this look at some of things I really enjoy working on.
Until next week

Something Stinks at Pig in the Park

As many of you are aware over the past two years I've been working to set up my business, Sosanna’s Closet.  Basically it’s where I sell clay sculptures, jewelry and more recently I've started carrying cloaks and dresses.  I've attended several Pagan-centric events, such as Pagan Pride Days Raleigh and several seasonal events at Truely Unique in Wilson with huge success.

Recently my hubby and I decided that we’d start branching out into other more mainstream festivals to get my art out there in the market.  One such even is called “Pig in the Park”.  (facebook page) Now I know what you’re thinking, Sosanna, this is a BBQ event, you’re a vegetarian, why would you go there?
Well I’m trying to set outside my comfort zone.  I wanted to start making Pagans more visible in my community.  I wanted them to see that we’re just like everyone else.

So I sent in my request to go to the event.  I was very excited.  I got the following reply from the Director of Tourism for the City of Goldsboro:

What items do you offer for sale?

No greeting …

I replied:
Hi (first name removed to protect her identity)
I sell handmade clay sculptures and wreaths as well as new age/metaphysical supplies.  Here is a link to my esty shop with some of the items I sell.  Saturday I will be at the Yule Bazaar in Wilson.
Today I got an email from the Development Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Wayne County that said the following:

I received a forward of your email to our tourism director.

Just wanted to let you know that I do not think that you would be a good fit for our PIG IN THE PARK festival because of our venue and theme.  Last year, we had some new, unique vendors to the event and they were disappointed in their sales.  I’m afraid that you would be, too.

Have a good day,
Signature removed to protect identity

No greeting.  Had no one taught these people how to write a business email?

No reference to why my shop isn't a good fit, just a statement that pretty much says one thing, YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE.

Now, being the type of person I am, Ms. Director had her signature on the email so I called her.  I asked her, “Why am I not a good fit for your festival.”  Keep in mind I’m looking at the page and seeing the list of Christian groups lined up to sing, and the reference that any “offensive” material is not permitted.

She stutters about and then says, “Well its pocket books, and people don’t do well that don’t sell pocketbooks and jewelry.”

I said, “I sell jewelry.  I sell custom clay statues and figurines. “

She said, well you know, regular stuff, jewelry and pocketbooks’.

I said, “You mean Christian stuff.”

She got all defensive and said, “now I didn't say that, you said that and I’m offended that you said that. I’m just trying to save you some money”

I said, “I bet you are.”

She said “we’re non-denominational and we accept all colors and everything, if you want waste your money that’s fine, but people usually don’t make anything unless they sell pocketbooks or BBQ sauce.”
Someone came to my door and knocked and the dogs were barking like crazy, so I just said I’ll be writing a letter because I feel you've discriminated against me and hung up the phone.

Really?

I contacted the Travel and Tourism Dept of Wayne County which apparently only has one person working it and I only got a voice mail every time.  I also checked one the City of Goldsboro Page and didn't find anything to help me either.  (Facebook Page)

So I guess instead of investing money in my own city, I’ll need to continue to go to other more open minded festivals where I won’t be judged because of which gods or goddesses I follow.  I’ll have to continue to reach out to more open minded counties that welcome anyone to join their events and help stimulate their economy instead of doing that here in Goldsboro.

Thank you, Ms. Director thank you for reminding me ever so strongly why I spent so many years in the broom closet.

I would have posted the entire email here but I’m not really sure of the legality of publishing their email addresses on my blog, so I decided to leave that bit off.  I do want to say, that on the Pig in the Park vendor page it lists arts and crafts as being accepted and it doesn't say a damn thing about pocketbooks.

Namaste & Blessed Be!

Sosanna's Closet Shop Launched

Good Afternoon Everyone!  I have wonderful news.  Over the past week I've been working diligently on my webpage. That's right, I finally got Sosannascloset.com up and running.  I've been able to add much of my content and even got my on storefront up and going.

I had hoped to be able to open a physical shop within the next few months but it does not appear that I'm going to be able to do that.  So instead hubby and I will continue attending vending events locally as well as getting the online shop open.

I've created several pages to outline the type of work I do, from jewelry to wreaths to clay.  Slowly I'll be limiting what I sell on Esty and cycling over to my online shop and my Facebook page.

I'm so exciting to be sharing this news with you today.  As part of this special I'm offering free US shipping on all the items currently listed in my online shop.  Head over and check it out!!

Pagan Blog Project – W is for Wreath

W is for Wreath

1. Something intertwined or arranged in a circular shape: as
a : a band of intertwined flowers or leaves worn as a mark of honor or victory
      : garland <a laurel wreath>
b : a decorative arrangement of foliage or flowers on a circular base <a Christmas wreath>
2. Something having a circular or coiling form <a wreath of smoke>

The history of the wreath is pretty interesting.  Wreaths originated in ancient Greece and Rome where members of that society would hand make ring shaped wreaths out of leaves, twigs and flowers.  These wreaths would we worn on the head and would usually represent the wearers position or status in the society.  Laurel wreaths were used to crown the winners of the Olympic Games.  The word wreath comes from the Greek word diadema which means a thing bound around.

Today we have wreaths all year around, but traditionally wreaths were kept for Christmas.  There’s even a school of thought that says that Christians invented wreaths 1,000 years before Christ was born as a way to show the struggle of life through the winter months.

A quick search on Google will give you all sorts of wreaths.  From pine to dried willow wreaths can and are used to celebrate each of the seasonal holidays around the world.  Personally I prefer to have multipurpose wreaths that can do dual duty when it comes time to decorating.  And I've been known to dabble a bit in wreath making.  So when I get the itching for a new wreath I simply open up my closet and Voila!  New wreaths abound.

To date I've had several special order wreaths, which I gladly pack and ship around the US.

One of my Samhain Wreaths graces the doorstep at Mermaid Mansion and is owned by the lovely Mermaid Morrigan.

Known for her deep love of everything “Wreath” I've even had several of my lovely wreaths end up in the humble abode of the lovely Kallan Kennedy.

(Notice the Spider in Steeler colors)

A few of my favorite wreaths include this wonderful idea I had of a wreath that covers the entire year.  So looking at this photo you can see that my “Wheel of the Year” wreath actually starts at Yule on the top of the wheel and circles all the way around, stopping on each season with a flower, decoration or fruit that represents that particular season.

I've got some with skulls for Samhain and Sunflowers for Litha, I've even got small butterflies and buttercups for Imbolc.  I always recycle my wreaths so each is made from parts of other wreaths or flower arrangements in order to help lessen our carbon foot print on this wonderful planet.

So in a way, my wreaths are not only circles abound or show the wheel of our seasons circling around them, they also represent our need to recycle, and re-purpose items in order to keep this lovely Earth a healthy happy place for us to live.

Here are a few of my other wreaths that I've created.
