The Reviews

The Modern Witchcraft Book of Tarot (available in Hardcover and Kindle)

I know you have all heard the old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover", however I can say that the aesthetics of a book are very important to me. When I first picked up this book I was happy that it was a hard cover book but that is where it ended. For some reason they decided to stagger the pages in the book in such a way as to created a layered page layout.  It really bugs me. I can't stand to try to work with the page, some bending down some standing up.  While most would probably not have an issue with this it is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Next they did another one of my no no's when they decided to switch up the font sizes and face for no apparent reason throughout the book.  One page is one size, and the page facing it another. It is distracting and annoying. I did managed to finish the book but still I really wish book printing would go back to creating works of art and not just toss together some pages haphazardly and then butcher the fonts.  To look at book making as an art I recommend checking out LaPulia Book of Shadows

Screenshot from LaPulia Book of Shadows Website

The author starts out with a solid history on the book, explaining the origins of the Tarot and how to understand the symbols and the language used within. The first chapters are short and very direct providing insight on different divination devices including i Ching, pendulums and crystals. I found it refreshing to see an entire chapter on Numerology related to the Tarot. Most know that their is a five of Cups for example, but the meaning behind the number is so often overlooked in some of these books.  I found myself making connections simply from reading this section and referring back to previous readings.

Part II of the book takes us into the cards themselves beginning with the suit cards.  It breaks down each one including their upright and reversed meanings.  Think of this section as that little handbook that comes with your deck. It gives examples about what the card means in relation to our modern daily activities. The Major Arcana follows with quotes from assorted magical and non-magical people, which I found delightful.
"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.  Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." ~Helen Keller

Chapter 12 jumps into Tarot Spreads.  This section is pretty straightforward and offers a series of card layouts that are easy for the layman reader to understand.

The World Tree Spread has always been my favorite.  Below you can see the layout from Google Books. If you do not see the tree simply use the search box to type in World Tree and that image will be displayed.

Part IV of the book is called Using Tarot Cards in Magick Work. This section takes the cards and puts them in as ingredients of the spell work in question.  Love spells, Money spells and so on.  One stood out to me in particular. On page 247 the author pens a Goodbye Debt Spell using cedar, fire and the Five of Pentacles.

Rider-Waite - Five of Pentacles

In this spell we're asked to take this card and and visualize our debt "going up in smoke" if you will as we light fire to the card.  I have found that decks can be a bit pricey and I would recommend if you're going to do magic using the cards as ingredients that you think about other ways to incorporate them in order to save your deck. You could for example, make a photo copy of the card and use that copy or maybe pull in more of your own energy by drawing a likeness of the card and use that instead.

The last chapter of the book gives us a bit of direction on what we should do moving forward as a reader. It recommend two very critical steps in my opinion.  First and foremost, practice practice practice. I cannot emphasize enough how often I have had readings from individuals who all but pulled the book out to give me a reading.  I could have done that myself. Knowing your tools is one of the most important parts of a reading. Being able to connect with your cards and speaking with confidence will make your client feel satisfied in your reading and help encourage them to follow your advice. She also recommends working with a professional reader.  Go out and find a great reader and buy readings from them. Watch how they work.  Learn from them. In some cases you may find a shop or even someone online who may be interested in mentoring you.  At the very least get a professional reading.  My experience in the Tarot is limited. I rely heavily on my sister Kallan for these types of needs. My divination skills lay in photo (aura type) readings.  She, on the other hand is quite gifted in reading the Tarot and Totems. You can find her on her Facebook Page and see all the reading packages she has to offer on her website.

Over all, I'll give this book a thumbs up.  I think it is clear and concise and a great start for the beginner and a good reference for the experienced Tarot reader.

The Modern Witchcraft Book of Love Spells (available in Hardcover and Kindle)

As many of my avid followers know, I don't do love spells. To me love spells are just not worth the trouble they create. That being said I went into this book with the idea that I was learning love magic for the first time. The author takes the time to explain what magic is and how important our intention is. She says that a spell is not a religious act, though some choose to work through a God or Goddess. They are a natural, intentional and time honored method for directing the course of your life. To me that explains magic completely.  I think this was a really great thing to put in the mind of young crafters. She also covers the basics of days of the week, elements, creating an altar, casting a circle and all the "Everything You Need to Know to be a Witch"  categories.  I found this to be an excellent addition.  Unlike the other books that I have read that simply toss out an ingredient list and don't address the actual ethical principles behind love magic.

Altar Photo - Renee Sosanna Olson

The next few chapters delve into working with candles, colors and crystals. There is a two page crystal and gemstone table on page 50 that aids in selecting the correct crystal for the right job. Pearl to strengthen self esteem, jade to enhance beauty and coral to attract love. Cleansing the stones and care is included as well. Which many books tend to leave out.

Crystal Magic - Renee Sosanna Olson

The section to follow includes a plant and talisman magic. Working with herbs and runes are the hallmarks of heathen witchcraft.  I have a friend who spends a great deal of time working in these elements.  I thought of her immediately when I stumbled across the "Attract Love with a Rule Talisman" spell on page 88.  This spell tells us to use the Old Norse rune Gebo (symbolized as an X) to make our talisman.

This is a Gebo Talisman created by Loren for her Primitive Witchery shop.  You can find this and many other Old Norse design items for sale in her shop on the web and on Facebook.

Art & Design by Loren Morris

The X we see used today when we sign letters "hugs and kisses" using the X to represent kisses "xoxo".

The author wraps up this book with a chapter called "What's the Next Step?".  This section summarizes what I believe is missing from magic today in three very clear steps.  One, Learn about different schools of thought.  No one is the be all end all on any particular subject.  We need to take the time to learn about other cultures so that we can grow.  Second, Work with other people.  To me this is hand in hand with number one.  We need to be able to meet and grow. We cannot grow alone.  Be it in an online community or in a coven reach out to those around you and see if there is something more you can add to your plate to enhance your life experiences. Finally, three - craft your own spells.  This is so very important. While anyone can recite a spell from memory it takes cunning and craft to create your spell using your words. Your emotions and your intentions. Take the time to become familiar enough with your magic that you are able to write your own spells.  This will be a skill that you will use for your entire magical career.

Over all, this was a very well written book. There are elements for the novice and the expert. There is indeed, something here for everyone. Even the avid "no love magic" caster can jump into Chapter 8 under the Editable Spells page and whip up something good for the cauldron. I recommend the smoothies. Just substitute that yogurt for coconut milk yogurt and you're good to go for a vegan surprise for your sweetheart!

Witchy Wednesday - Head Witch in Charge

Created by Renee Sosanna Olson

For this week's Witchy Wednesday I thought it might be cool to share a couple of witches that are pretty awesome.  They are the epitome of "Head Witch in Charge".

Photo Credit - Kallan Kennedy Instagram
First I wouldn't be who/where I am today without paying tribute to my very special big sister. Kallan is a wonderful friend and confidant.  She has a fantastic blog and is an amazing reader. If you haven't gotten one of her Totem readings yet, I highly recommend signing up for one. She is accurate to the nines and will blow your mind with the insights she can provide.  She is also an accomplished dream interpreter. She keeps me in check as well.  I'll be listing her contact info just so you can take a moment to follow her Instagram, check out her Facebook page and maybe hit her up for a reading on her website.  She means the world to me. She is a great listener and my biggest champion. She's never too busy to stop to listen to me or to provide a well needed kick in the backside to get off my duff and get busy with life. She's amazing and I am so glad to have her in my life.

Photo Credit - Primitive Witchery Facebook Page

Moving on to my next witch, I have to say that she is certainly on top of her game. Not one to shy away from a challenge (or a fight for that matter) Loren Morris is one crafty witch.  She shares my love of sculpting and putting people in their place. She is witty, strong willed and determined to do what is right for her self, body and family.  She has a wonderful business called Primitive Witchery where she peddles her amazing wares. She can also be found on Etsy, Instagram and the web.  We have been friends for quite a while now and I can tell you, you will never be able to get enough of her wit and charm.  If you have a chance head over and check out her pages. You won't be disappointed.

In a world where so many people tear each other down, I wanted to stop for a minute and build someone up.  I wanted to take this opportunity to call attention to bass ass witches getting the job done.  Now I challenge you.  Go out and find a couple of people to praise.  Give them a shout out for all the do and most off all tell them what they mean to you.  Life is short.  Play hard & tell'em you love'em.

Blessings!

A Witch's View - What Makes a Home?

Because of my ability to work from home, I have the benefit of being able to avoid certain stresses. I don't worry about traffic or car problems.  The weather is generally not a concern of mine when planning my work week.

I'm also pretty lucky that I have a fantastic partner who supports my need to be creative.  He allows me the freedom and the understanding to do all the crazy things that I do.  I tend to spend a lot of time making jewelry.  I do dabble a bit into soldering but my passion is weaving the wires. It is so relaxing to me.  Recently I made a few pieces that I really loved.  I have shared them on here before and one of them is actually sold already but I can't help but share it again.

Photography and Jewelry by Renee Sosanna Olson

This piece really spoke to me.  It spoke to me about protection. While I was weaving the wires together I thought about the wrapping of the copper around the glass eye. Copper is well know for the healing properties it possesses.  I leveraged that along with the knowledge that comes from seeing clearly what is around you. The friends that are behaving as enemies or the family that is behaving as a foe. Using the eye as a way to see what you really need to see, you can open up a channel of knowledge simply by allowing the eye to see what you have been blinded to.

Many people use the adage "Home is where the heart is" , to me I'm one that doesn't give much thought to the structure that surrounds my belongings. A house is just a vessel that I use to keep my stuff from getting wet. At least it always had been.  Last year Hurricane Matthew came through and wiped out many people here in Seven Springs.  We lost our vardo, which took away our ability to travel to our events.

Flood Oct 2016 - Renee Sosanna Olson

Now we're looking at the possibility of resettling.  It leads me to ask what exactly is a home? What do we need?  We're looking for a place with protection from the elements, but also a place where we can live with like minded people.  A place that we can afford but also a place that offers protections for people like us. We want to be around people who think like we think and care like we care about those around us.

Since moving back to NC, my childhood home, I have found that being close to blood relatives does not make a place home. As many of you know I ended up caring for my mother in my home a few years ago and I have just now gotten over the negativity she brought into my life.  At the time I placed her in a nursing home my younger sister got mad at me and pretty much disowned me. This past Christmas she came to my cousin's house and broke down in tears. I have to admit I didn't feel as connected to her but I thought I would give it a try.  My birthday is next week.  She has messaged me once on Facebook since then.  I really believe if I was that big a part of her life she would have reached out a bit more.  It is something I long for, but have come to understand that we just do not have that type of relationship.

Kallan & Renee

Ideally what makes a home is a place where you are safe and cared for.  A place where you can count on those around you. A place where someone remembers your birthday or calls you just because they want to talk to you. A home is where your family is. Not blood family necessarily but those who come to your defense when you're under attack.  They offer themselves up to help you when you are down and they want to know what your day is like. Just because they love you.

Renee, Kallan & Elijah

I will be going home soon.  Our walls will change.  Our address will be different.  Our lives will be happier.  I'll need one of those little signs that says "Home Sweet Home".  And don't you worry, on the back will be a nice little eye, just to help me keep my eyes open to the world around me.

A Real Vacation - A Witch's View

Over the weekend of July first hubby and I took a trip up to visit my sister Kallan.  We spend the entire weekend there with the family and had a fantastic trip.  We spend Saturday in DC and I wanted to share some of the wonderful photos!

Pagan Blog Project 2012 - X is for Xylomancy

Xylomancy is divination of the past, present and future using wood, twigs or fallen tree branches.  In biblical times seers would divine based on the pattern fallen tree limbs or other pieces of wood made when lying on the ground.  Like Dendromancy and Tephramancy (divination of ashes in burned tree trunk) it is thought that it has its origin in the tree worship.

I’ve searched the web and found several sites that are related to Xylomancy.  Most have the statements above and then links to various resources on trees.  Art of Divination for example has a list of trees correspondences.  For example it lists the Blackthorn for unexpected change and Beech for stability and energy flow.

Some ways to practice Xylomancy include stripping the branches of ½ the bark and tossing them on ground to examine the random patterns made.  Further watching the way logs are arranged in a fire place while they burned was another form of Xylomancy.

I found this video of Yule logs burning if you'd care to give it a try.

I found that Llewellyn lists this as divination by observing the pattern of thrown sticks or staves.   To me this sounds slightly different then the first definition which makes it sound as though we’re looking at random tree limbs falling in or around someone’s property and the second like throwing of bones

I then discovered that if I could only get my FAFSA to recognize Hogwards as a valid college I could go take a course on Xylomancy and learn divination by analyzing pieces of burning word.  Again slightly different than the original definition and in my mind leads more to fire scrying than “wood scrying”.

In my reading I’ve found that generally people ancient times (and sometimes me when I find my mirrors turned faced down) look at things that are out of the ordinary or different as an omen.  For example, if a baby died and a midwife was present she was sometimes accused of witchcraft and held accountable for the baby’s death.  If a black cat comes to your house, it brings difficulties, and breaking a mirror would be considered a bad omen.

So there you have it, a very basic introduction to Xylomancy.  I’d like to thanks my dearest sister Kallan, for a wonderful suggestion of this word and to remind you to head over to check out her blog!

NaBloWriMo - Witchy Wednesday - 1

It's Witchy Wednesday! And that means today's post is about witchy stuff!

In order to even start out in your witchy path it’s a pretty good idea to get your resources down.  You’re going to want to have a basic understanding of the history of your particular path.  When I started out I was basic Wicca student.  I embraced the Rede and tried to be sure to follow it.  Then I reconnected with a dear friend that reminded me, “Witch’s that cannot curse cannot heal.”

I then began my studies of Hecate and was drawn to her.  I happily consider myself “Hecatean” now and even though I do make some crafty things around some traditions of Wicca, I’m not a die-hard follower of that path.  And the journey down any path should always include a map.  Here’s a list of different folks that I feel can help you on your Witchy Ways.

Confessions of a Kitchen Witch – Currently offering a Wicca/Witchcraft 101 Class and provides great info on all things Kitchen-Witchy.

The Secret Life of the American Working Witch – Outlines the week in witchy things with the Sunday Stew & Includes links to book and other information on all things witchy.

Good Green Witch – Takes you down the path to green witchery, learn about new ways to become green, from herbal teas to taking on Monsanto.

And for info on Hecate/Hekate check out these sites:

Hekate – Her Sacred Fires – Dedications/Rituals to the Goddess
The Covenant of Hekate  - Community dedicated to the Goddess

Those are just three sources from an amazing list of folks out there talking about their paths.  The best thing you can do is arm yourself with information.  And any witch worth her weight in salt will be happy to answer your questions.

Have a wonderful Witchy Wednesday

Finally....I'm Done..

So today is the day.  I'm waiting now for the bank to open so that I can go up and remove my name from the account.  It's been a long crazy seven months.  I've put on weight and become completely stressed out.  I'm looking over all that I accomplished over the last few months.

I was able to take someone who was obese and get their weight under control.
I was able to take someone with a 400+ blood sugar and get them down to 110 or below daily.
I was able to take someone who was nearly blind and manage to get not only one, but two pair of glasses.
I was able to take someone who was barely able to walk around alone and get her back up and moving.
I was able to take someone who ate fast food every day, to eating organic, even vegetarian food.
I was able to take someone who had excessive debt and get it manageable.

Even if she doesn't appreciate it, I still accomplished that.  Even if some of my family have disowned me and accused me of stealing.  Even if they are accusing me of lying, I know that I am telling the truth.

I've also found a growing network of friends and family online to help me through all this.  One thing that happened very dear to me was all the outpouring of support not only in my blog but also in the emails and facebook messages that came in.  I adore each and every one of you and am very proud to call you my friends.

I've even been invited as a sister to a very dear friend.  We've known each other many many years, and I found her again by this crazy invention called Facebook.   Thank you so much my sister, you have been amazing with your support, not only in words but your energy and thoughts of me during your spell work have been an amazing benefit and I am proud to call you sister.  If I can't make it up to complete a ritual with you, we'll have to work out something that we can both do remotely and then bind our energies together.  My dearest Kallan, thank you.

I'm a little nervous as I sit here 6 minutes before they open.  Tick tock tick tock... I'm looking forward to being free.  I'm looking forward to being at peace.  I have my friends and family here and I have the Goddess with me.

Happy Wednesday Everyone....

October Happenings & Samhain Giveaways

I love love love October. The end of the year is rolling around the leaves are beginning to change. There's a slight crispness to the air. It's my favorite time of the year.

I love the smells of fireplaces beginning to burn and oh yeah, SAMHAIN! It's my favorite holiday, with Beltane bringing in a close second. This was the day hubby and I had our hand-fasting and the day we recognize our anniversary. This year will be nine years together! Truly a magical time of the year.

I love October for another reason. YES! Blog giveaways! Currently there are several blog giveaways going on and I'd like to highlight two.

First we have Kallan over at The Secret Life of the American Working Witch. She has started the first of her Samhain giveaways with a wreath from me, at "Sosanna's Closet" and a protection pouch. Kallan sent me a protection pouch a while back and these are great to have around. My was specially created for me and I still have it today. It's awesome. I won't be entering this round of the contest, but I know she's also going to have more stuff and I can't wait to see what's next!

The next giveaway that looks amazing is over at Mrs. B's Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom. I've entered to win a couple of her giveaways before, however this one looks really awesome. The book she's giving away is "The Witches Book of the Dead". I've been having quite a bit of spiritual activity lately and I'd love to see what this books has to say on the subject. I've tried some divination work to try to see what's here, but I'm not having much luck. Maybe I'll win this one!

There are some other events going on like the "Get off Your Broom Fitness Challenge" over at "The Domestic Pagan" and "The Real Witches of Halloween" at WitchBlog.

Overall a great way to head into the holiday season, wish me luck on my entries this season, hopefully I'll get some treats!

Central NC Pagan Pride Days

Less than 24 hours stand between me and my very first Pagan Pride festival. I'm extremely excited about this. I've been getting ready all week. Last night Hubby finished two my my tattoos that we've been working on. Silly but I really wanted them complete before the festival.

I have an arm band.

And a calf piece now.

The pictures are a little off because of the flash on my phone. I'll be headed to the store today to pick up a new camera. Just in time for the festival. I hope to have lots of pictures. The Greek Festival is happening at the same time so I am looking forward to.... Yes, you guessed it Falafel!!

I wrote an article about Pagan Pride Days on examiner.com. You can find the article here. For each like I get they pay me. Subscriptions are worth some money too. Just to put this in perspective however, I have been writing for them for about 4-5 months now and I've earned $6. LOL

With all this going on right now I also wanted to mention that it is getting close to the time when the DC-40/51 initiative is getting started. They have released their prayer manual and are getting set to take "siege" to Washington DC. They also have released the blood covered light over us Pagans to combat our magic.

My friend and fellow blogger Kallan Kennedy, over at The Secret Life of the American Working Witch, had an amazing response. You can find it here. This post is so amazing that there isn't anything that I can add to it. Other than. DITTO.

So as we head out for our weekend, take a moment to reflect on what is really going on here. What do they really want to gain? What should we do in response?

I'm continuing my weekly rites to protect Columbia and stopping each day to take a moment to appreciate my freedoms that I have today. Just as you appreciate your family, your friends and those precious things around you, count the first amendment among those things you hold dear, and just offer a bit of positive energy towards our goal of keeping it safe.
