Coventry Creations - A Product Reivew - A Witch's View

This week I'm lucky enough to be able to share with you some of the amazing (and fun) products that are available Coventry Creations.  Coventry Creations is an endeavor headed up by Jackie and Patty. They describe themselves as the following on their website

Jacki has been studying ancient magical traditions and interpreting them for use in today’s modern world since 1992.  She is internationally known both for her award winning books and the Coventry Creations line of intentional candles, oils, and sprays.  Jacki’s earthy, practical approach to magic takes out the spooky and adds in a flavor of lighthearted humor.  Her studies in theology, tarot, herbalism, astrology, world religions, and psychology inspired her to write Coventry Magic and co-author DIY Akashic Wisdom with Patty.    Jacki is also co-host to “Keep it Magic Radio,” with Storm Cestavani, this bi-monthly podcast is hit with 10,000 + active listeners every show.

Patty, is the co-owner of the Candle Wick Shoppe and Coventry Creations with her sister. Patty is a Reiki Master and Director of the Dharma Room Reiki Clinic which opened in September 2010.  It has always a dream of hers to give back to the community, one person at a time, in a way that would be personally rewarding and life changing.  Patty teaches reiki classes, founded the Reiki Healing Center, hosts a reiki share and clinic, and offers private appointments for advanced reiki healing.

In my research for this post I did some digging around and found some really interesting info on these folks.  First I was really impressed with the quality of the website and the information included in the box they sent me. I have been asked to do some reviews for shops that were pretty sketchy. I even refused a couple simply because I didn't agree with the ethical position they were in.  This is not the case here. Coventry Creations puts out a very positive energy and exudes professionalism.  Even the videos on their YouTube channel are fantastic.

Here's an link to Ask Aunt Jackie series on their YouTube Channel regarding cleansing your space.

So let's get started in that box!  First let's talk about presentation. Ever get a box and your stuff was all disheveled.  This was not the case with this shipment from Coventry Creations.  I could tell instantly it was packed with care. Just look at how the outside of the box was labeled and taped.

When I opened the box it has this lovely (and high quality, I might add) printed booklet right on top. No bent edges or crinkled pages. Classy all the way.  Oh, and when I opened the box, the smell was amazing. Those candles inside really lit up the joint!  (pun intended)

Inside my box as I dug though the lovely black packing material I found a tall Money Draw Candle, a wonderful collection of votives and some whimsical Witch's Union items.  A coffee cup, a book and these fantastic little patches. I felt like I should bust out my jean jacket and begin sewing these on immediately. As bar of this pack I also had two packs of matches. I tested them out and the sticks on these are fantastic.  No more breaking at inopportune moments if you know what I mean.  LOL

Here's a look at those patches.  You can pick up some individually and of course the awesome Witch's Union Kit has them included as well as the Coffee Cup, Matches and Book!

Another look at my goodies with a shot of the Votives. These scents were just amazing. The burn time is great and I really liked the fact they were individually wrapped.  There's my coffee cup!  "Powering Up"   LOL Just love it!

Here's a shot of the Spell Caster Club Cards.  They were printed really well with a glossy finish. I loved the way they came together and I can see someone using these over and over again.

Here's what I got!

Witches Union Kit - Convetrycreations.com

Witch's Union Starter Kit - Link - Review - These items are simply adorable. It is a tongue in cheek view of our witchy world which I can totally appreciate.  My cup was solid and these little patches are just fantastic. Each one has a cute description on the back and my favorite has to be the Protection Invocation Patch.  After all who doesn't need a patch that calls upon the Dark Goddess for protection.

For more info on the Witch's Union check out this video from Jackie.

Votives -  Review - I loved the fact that each candle was individually wrapped. The attention to detail in this box was fantastic. When I opened up each votive there were no scratches and scrapes that are usually seen on candles being shipped. Great job here!  The burn time was fantastic and the smell. Just awesome!

Happiness (Yellow) - Link
Ganesha (Burgundy) - Link
Dragon's Blood (Red) - Link
Sacred White Sage (White) - Link
The votives come in their spell kits too.

Money Draw Blessed Herbal Candle - Link  - Review -  Arrived wonderfully packed and was a delight to use. The only recommendation I would make is to include the blessing that is printed on the candle wrapper somewhere else in the box as well. That way you don't need to worry about it if you tear the label when opening. Overall excellent product!

Spell Caster Club Cards - Link  Review - These were adorable and I can see how they would be really useful for a witch whose just getting started or who wants to have a quick reference sheet. They have a nice coating on them which I can see being useful for wiping down the occasional oil drip or wild magical accident.  I loved the vibrant images and the high quality printing on these.  Certainly a great addition to welcome a new member to your coven or just to have a little magical fun.

My final thoughts would be that this is a really great take on our magical world. The kits are great and I really love the whimsy that is being introduced.  The products are high quality and upscale. I can see how the dedication to producing a powerful product line and supporting that line with classes and online access to interviews with the owners are readily available.  You would be hard pressed to find this type of attention to detail in many of the shops (and products) on the market today. Take a moment to head over to their website, check out their blog and of course the YouTube videos by Coventry Creations.  I don't think you'll be disappointed!  Be sure to leave a note on their videos and if you like what you see, give them a thumbs up.  As a content creator we all live for a little note that says Great job!

The Reviews

The Modern Witchcraft Book of Tarot (available in Hardcover and Kindle)

I know you have all heard the old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover", however I can say that the aesthetics of a book are very important to me. When I first picked up this book I was happy that it was a hard cover book but that is where it ended. For some reason they decided to stagger the pages in the book in such a way as to created a layered page layout.  It really bugs me. I can't stand to try to work with the page, some bending down some standing up.  While most would probably not have an issue with this it is one of my biggest pet peeves.

Next they did another one of my no no's when they decided to switch up the font sizes and face for no apparent reason throughout the book.  One page is one size, and the page facing it another. It is distracting and annoying. I did managed to finish the book but still I really wish book printing would go back to creating works of art and not just toss together some pages haphazardly and then butcher the fonts.  To look at book making as an art I recommend checking out LaPulia Book of Shadows

Screenshot from LaPulia Book of Shadows Website

The author starts out with a solid history on the book, explaining the origins of the Tarot and how to understand the symbols and the language used within. The first chapters are short and very direct providing insight on different divination devices including i Ching, pendulums and crystals. I found it refreshing to see an entire chapter on Numerology related to the Tarot. Most know that their is a five of Cups for example, but the meaning behind the number is so often overlooked in some of these books.  I found myself making connections simply from reading this section and referring back to previous readings.

Part II of the book takes us into the cards themselves beginning with the suit cards.  It breaks down each one including their upright and reversed meanings.  Think of this section as that little handbook that comes with your deck. It gives examples about what the card means in relation to our modern daily activities. The Major Arcana follows with quotes from assorted magical and non-magical people, which I found delightful.
"Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement.  Nothing can be done without hope and confidence." ~Helen Keller

Chapter 12 jumps into Tarot Spreads.  This section is pretty straightforward and offers a series of card layouts that are easy for the layman reader to understand.

The World Tree Spread has always been my favorite.  Below you can see the layout from Google Books. If you do not see the tree simply use the search box to type in World Tree and that image will be displayed.

Part IV of the book is called Using Tarot Cards in Magick Work. This section takes the cards and puts them in as ingredients of the spell work in question.  Love spells, Money spells and so on.  One stood out to me in particular. On page 247 the author pens a Goodbye Debt Spell using cedar, fire and the Five of Pentacles.

Rider-Waite - Five of Pentacles

In this spell we're asked to take this card and and visualize our debt "going up in smoke" if you will as we light fire to the card.  I have found that decks can be a bit pricey and I would recommend if you're going to do magic using the cards as ingredients that you think about other ways to incorporate them in order to save your deck. You could for example, make a photo copy of the card and use that copy or maybe pull in more of your own energy by drawing a likeness of the card and use that instead.

The last chapter of the book gives us a bit of direction on what we should do moving forward as a reader. It recommend two very critical steps in my opinion.  First and foremost, practice practice practice. I cannot emphasize enough how often I have had readings from individuals who all but pulled the book out to give me a reading.  I could have done that myself. Knowing your tools is one of the most important parts of a reading. Being able to connect with your cards and speaking with confidence will make your client feel satisfied in your reading and help encourage them to follow your advice. She also recommends working with a professional reader.  Go out and find a great reader and buy readings from them. Watch how they work.  Learn from them. In some cases you may find a shop or even someone online who may be interested in mentoring you.  At the very least get a professional reading.  My experience in the Tarot is limited. I rely heavily on my sister Kallan for these types of needs. My divination skills lay in photo (aura type) readings.  She, on the other hand is quite gifted in reading the Tarot and Totems. You can find her on her Facebook Page and see all the reading packages she has to offer on her website.

Over all, I'll give this book a thumbs up.  I think it is clear and concise and a great start for the beginner and a good reference for the experienced Tarot reader.

The Modern Witchcraft Book of Love Spells (available in Hardcover and Kindle)

As many of my avid followers know, I don't do love spells. To me love spells are just not worth the trouble they create. That being said I went into this book with the idea that I was learning love magic for the first time. The author takes the time to explain what magic is and how important our intention is. She says that a spell is not a religious act, though some choose to work through a God or Goddess. They are a natural, intentional and time honored method for directing the course of your life. To me that explains magic completely.  I think this was a really great thing to put in the mind of young crafters. She also covers the basics of days of the week, elements, creating an altar, casting a circle and all the "Everything You Need to Know to be a Witch"  categories.  I found this to be an excellent addition.  Unlike the other books that I have read that simply toss out an ingredient list and don't address the actual ethical principles behind love magic.

The next few chapters delve into working with candles, colors and crystals. There is a two page crystal and gemstone table on page 50 that aids in selecting the correct crystal for the right job. Pearl to strengthen self esteem, jade to enhance beauty and coral to attract love. Cleansing the stones and care is included as well. Which many books tend to leave out.

Crystal Magic - Renee Sosanna Olson

The section to follow includes a plant and talisman magic. Working with herbs and runes are the hallmarks of heathen witchcraft.  I have a friend who spends a great deal of time working in these elements.  I thought of her immediately when I stumbled across the "Attract Love with a Rule Talisman" spell on page 88.  This spell tells us to use the Old Norse rune Gebo (symbolized as an X) to make our talisman.

This is a Gebo Talisman created by Loren for her Primitive Witchery shop.  You can find this and many other Old Norse design items for sale in her shop on the web and on Facebook.

Art & Design by Loren Morris

The X we see used today when we sign letters "hugs and kisses" using the X to represent kisses "xoxo".

The author wraps up this book with a chapter called "What's the Next Step?".  This section summarizes what I believe is missing from magic today in three very clear steps.  One, Learn about different schools of thought.  No one is the be all end all on any particular subject.  We need to take the time to learn about other cultures so that we can grow.  Second, Work with other people.  To me this is hand in hand with number one.  We need to be able to meet and grow. We cannot grow alone.  Be it in an online community or in a coven reach out to those around you and see if there is something more you can add to your plate to enhance your life experiences. Finally, three - craft your own spells.  This is so very important. While anyone can recite a spell from memory it takes cunning and craft to create your spell using your words. Your emotions and your intentions. Take the time to become familiar enough with your magic that you are able to write your own spells.  This will be a skill that you will use for your entire magical career.

Over all, this was a very well written book. There are elements for the novice and the expert. There is indeed, something here for everyone. Even the avid "no love magic" caster can jump into Chapter 8 under the Editable Spells page and whip up something good for the cauldron. I recommend the smoothies. Just substitute that yogurt for coconut milk yogurt and you're good to go for a vegan surprise for your sweetheart!

Witchy Wednesday - Bringing the Magic Back to BaubleSmith

A little over 7 months ago a hurricane came thought and flooded a large portion of Eastern North Carolina.  My little corner of the world was included in the area.  We were luckier than most in that we only lost our vardo and our ability to vend for the next year.  Heartbreaking as it is so many people were in a much more harsh situation than we were/are in.  The water in the river is still very high and at this point we still have water on our property.  But at least we can stay on our property. Some cannot even return to their homes.

When our business sailed down the river, hubby and I discussed the best way to move forward and we thought about changing direction in our business and trying to become more mainstream vs. our direct Pagan/Witchy direction.  We revamped the website and I started marketing.  We have found that no matter how hard I try, I tend to sprinkle magic in here and there. Examples include - Hubby wants to make bath salts, I go off on a tangent about how wonderful that is and how we should do ritual bath soaks with ones for Samhain, Yule .... you get the picture.

Next he wants to make resin bracelets.  My eyes glaze over as I start recommending pentacles and ravens and you see where I'm going.

As we tried to make our more mainstream, the magic found its way in. As we rebuild from this devastation and it could be up to 3 years before the buyouts are completed by the state, We sit here trying to understand where we're going and what we're going to be doing while we wait for the uncertainty that is dealing with governmental agencies. All we can do is keep the magic flowing and direct our energies towards making life at this place better while we are here.

I'm beginning to pick up my clay again.  I may have some new items showing up in the shop soon. I've created some goddess pieces that I can't wait to share with you.  I have also added some candles back to the shop. These were always wonderful additions and I know that they will continue to help bring light to those who need it.

So today, I'm waiting.  I'm watching. I'm spelling. Directing the forces of nature and the powers of the elements to guide this process to an end. I hear three years but, I long for 3 weeks.

So mote it be.

Witchy Wednesday - Protection from Harm

We have heard the old saying, "A Witch that cannot hex cannot heal."  I am a firm believer in that. Healing to me is a form of proactive protection.  We need to be able to set up wards and mirror negative energies back out to those attacking us.  This week I'm going to reference The Big Book of Practical Spells - Everyday Magic that Works by Judika Illes. I highly recommend picking up her book and supporting all of our witchy authors!

Judika has a section of this book dedicated to protection spells. From creating a magical garden of protection with dill, clover, gardenia, juniper and rose to bodyguard dream pillows you can find a good spell in this book to cover just about any situation.

The Scandinavian House Protection Amulet is one of my favorites.  Judika instructs the reader to form a cross with birch twigs, bind them with red thread and add crystals or roots to intensify the protection aspects.  Something simple and easy. - page 157

There are times however when you need to pull a bit deeper into your mojo to get those shields up.  If you have an attack from another witch or when that protection need to be from those in your own family. Along with mirroring spells and protection salts I often will use acorn magic to help keep those who should be close at a distance.  I'll share with you this week my basic protection from family spell.

Supplies
4 tea lights for the 4 directions
1 main pillar/taper candle (white) I keep this in the center of the 4 tea lights)
1 taper candle (red)
1 small jar or vessel that can be buried in the yard
Acorns with the top intact (you'll need one for each person who is attacking you)
Marker
1 raw chicken egg
1 bundle of sage
1 incense stick (Myrrh, Angelica, Cedar, Dragon's Blood, Clove, Juniper, Lotus, Sandlewood)

Instructions
Use the sage to cleans the area you plan to work in.
Light the four candles from top, clockwise and recognize the directions/elements and welcome them.
If you call the quarters or request the presence of deities this is a good time to get that mojo working.
Light the center candle and focus your mind on that flame.  Welcome the magic into your body.

Take the marker and put the initials on the acorn of the person from whom you need protection. Repeat for each person on separate acorns.

Light the incense stick from the center candle and use the flame to light the red taper. Focus your energy on bringing the power of the elements, the magic of the directions and the strength of the deity/magic you called in the opening circle into this red candle.  This candle is now charged.  It is your power source.

Carefully hold the candle in one hand and then drop a single drop of red wax over the initials on each of the acorns. See yourself silencing the harm that is coming from each acorn.  Watch the wax encase the negativity being sent to you.  Focus your mind on stopping the hatred coming from its source.

Photo Credit - Renee Sosanna Olson

As each wax dot dries drop the acorn into the vessel you have chosen to rid yourself of this energy.

Take the egg and place it inside the vessel with the acorns and close it tight.

Close your circle as you normally would. - For me I simply reverse the process, extinguishing each candle in a counter clockwise manner and thank the elements for their presence.

The sealed jar should be taken outside and buried in a safe place and left alone.  If you can't bury the jar immediately, place it in the freezer until you can.

And that's it.  That's the best way to take care of yourself from family who is trying to harm you. I use acorns as they represent family ties and connections. The wax acts as a binding element to stop the harm from coming in and sealing it in the ground buries that connection.

Again I always believe that the best spells come from within so be willing to look up ingredients and find the right candle colors or herbs that will fit your specific situation the best.

Hope this is helpful to someone out there.  I had the feeling someone is getting some harm from their family.  Hang in there.  Protect yourself.

Truely Unique - Wilson NC

Thanks to a suggestion by Tina, a friend on Facebook, I visited a little shop today that was indeed Truely Unique. The owner Kay greeted me from the back of the cottage, with a chipper Hello there!

I walked around the entry way and found an amazing collection of items.

The first to catch my attention were the crystal balls. As some of you may know I recently purchased a crystal ball from "Pagan Stuff Cheap" and just love it.

The crystals at Truely Unique are amazing. The sizes are extraordinary and the selection is amazing.

As I walked around the shop, it was really homey. I felt completely at ease here. There was nothing dark or negative to be found. The entire house had been converted into an amazing shop. The kitchen housed the herbs and teas. Kay is a third generation herbalist as well as the owner operator of the location. She sells herbs, teas and even a vegetarian dip that I'm eager to give a try. The store has over 250 different herbs and blends available. They even ship!

While chatting with Kay, she offered me a lovely cup of tea, which was completely delightful. I have to admit, a wonderful welcoming environment.

She chatted with me for nearly an hour about the shop's class schedule and some of the activities that they plan to have going on through out the remainder of the year. I was a bit surprised that there was this thriving pagan community so close to me. Kay mentioned that they have a community garden and offer a divination night where folks come around to offer insights from beyond to those eagar to know more about the past present or future.

For the last 6 years I've been looking for a group and this one was here just a short drive away.

Kay went on to tell me about the Monster Bash that's coming up to benefit the Spiral Scout Troop that they've helped to sponsor.

Here's a few of their upcoming events:
Herb Class with Kay - July 7th - $5 fee

Drawing Down The Moon - Open Circle - July 14th from 8:30 - 11:30 - Free

Candle Magic with Rosemary Grace - July 16th 6:00 - 9:00 - $10 fee

You can find links to the great events being put on at Truely Unique by checking out their Events page on Facebook.

Hubby even volunteered to take me to whatever event I wanted to attend as he felt that of all religions "Pagans" seem to be the most accepting group. I tend to agree.

At home now I sit looking over the photos I took and sipping on a cup of the Fairy Delight Tea she sent me home with and I have to say, it was a wonderful experience. The shop delightful, the hostess amazing and the tea, well the tea is Truely Unique.

Truely Unique can be found on the web at http://truelyunique.com/, a Blog and an Etsy Shop.

Ritutal vs. Belief

In order to get more money in my life, I take a green candle and cleans it by the light of the full moon. I carve my desire to have more money on the candle and after calling the Guardians I light my candle and meditate on what I want to happen. Each time I see the candle burning it reminds me that I need to focus on work/task/chores that bring this "magic" to fruition.

So, let's say I change the candle color and I complete all the exact same steps. Will my "magic" fail to work? How about if I fail to cleanse my candle in the light of the full moon? How about if I forget to write "money" on the candle? How much can I leave out before my "magic" fails?

There's only one thing that you can leave out of this magical spell that will change the outcome of the spell. That is you. You are the power behind the spell. You are the magic. The other items are tools that remind you. Tools that focus you. Tools that lead you to the end result. The candle cannot produce this magic alone. There will only be silence if you are not there to address the energies of time and space to pull your magic out. You are the power.

Finding your magic is like connecting to a great pool of energy outside the conscious realm. You can go back and access this energy pool and pull it into your life at any time. You are the one with the power. Using your mind you can center yourself and send out this power to others around you.

Sit back, close your eyes and think about your body. Focus on the chakra points in your body, see them swirling around and feel them being energized from that great pool of energy. Feel it moving across your body and accept that you have the power to allow that energy to flow through your body and mind and cleanse it of items that would block its ability to flow easily.

This is the choice. Belief or Ritual. You can believe you have the power to do this,or you can follow the ritual, keep lighting that green candle in hopes that money will arrive. You can visulize the completed "spell" or you can dwell on the journey to find the correct herb. You can enjoy the benefit of having this centered energy, this completed magical source of power that comes from within or you can sit and wonder if this candle is ever going to work.

I for one, plan to reach for the prior.

Just for today, I will not be worry
Just for today, I will not be angry
Just for today, I will work honestly
Just for today, I will be thankful for my blessings
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Namaste
&
Blessed Be
