This week I wanted to share my latest video.  I've been concentrating on Heart, Sacral and Root recently. I really love the sounds of these three together.

Singing bowls have been around since the 1980s. There is some thoughts that maybe our ancestors worked with crystals and more recently science has shown that these crystals resonate a sound that has proved beneficial to human cells.

Singing bowls can be used for meditation and just a relationship to the sound waves has shown positive impact on the human body.

I have been working with the bowls, using the sound to help welcome relaxing and create a release in my body.  Excess energy seems to float away.

This session was extremely helpful for me.  Even the dog let out a little call to let me know he was enjoying the session.

I hope you enjoy.

Healing Sounds - A Brief History

Through our existence on this planet we have been attracted to the rhythmic beat of  the drum or the haunting sounds of the flute.  No matter how it was created, through bone or reed. Through animal skin or hollow log; the beat of the drum carried us to places that were safe, happy and healing. Sound is all around us. It has the power to join with us (resonate) or split us apart (dissonant).

Healing sounds have been around since we humans picked up our first stick and tapped it against a fallen log. The medical uses of sound therapy walks the same path as treatments such as acupuncture. For example the Chinese believed that the body was affected by the tone and vibrations, and the pain of acupuncture could be dulled by making sounds to accompany the therapy.

Tibetan Cymbals

Sounds were used in healing through out almost every culture in existence. From the Egyptians to the modern world these societies pulled together their resources and experience to create a wellness treatment that consisted of sound.  Ancient Greeks treated physical injuries, sickness and mental distress with sound. This continued throughout Europe where religious ceremonies took on singing, chants and used them for spiritual enlightenment.

Our ancient ancestral cultures such as the Aborigines, Tibetans, Indians and of course the Egyptians all practiced sound therapy in some way.  They believed that the sound would resonate with our body and create an over all sense of calm or excitement based on the type of sound played. That sound held the power to heal our bodies, our minds and connect us to the gods.

Shamanic healers across all cultures are often seen as the produces of this sound healing magic. They were the one to go to and listen to in order to heal the body and mind. Usually the holders of this information were women. Even our Greek ancestors believed that music had the power to charm the savage beast and magicians across these same cultures used sound to provoke (and in some cases invoke) the power of magic through ritual sound.

One of the oldest instruments found is a 40,000 year old Neanderthal flute made of a vulture bone. Drums, rattles, shakers, flutes - anything we could use to make sound, our ancestors did and we still do today. As early as 500BC the Pythagoreans were linking sound to healing. Even our earth has its own frequency. 7.83hz is the heartbeat of our planet. And exposing our bodies to this frequency has shown improvement in focus, low energy, trouble sleeping and stress.

Over the next few weeks I'll be sharing a lot of information (and science) with you on the power of the healing power of sounds. Together on this journey I'll help guide you to understanding what you can do on a daily basis to bring this power into your life. Experience the healing energy and the happiness that you can achieve though sound, harmonic healing and we'll explore the tools of the trade.

I hope you'll join me for the entire series.

The Ultimate Guide to Energy Healing - A Review

Today I'm reviewing The Ultimate Guide to Energy Healing - A beginner's Guide to Healing Your Chakras, Aura, and Energy Body by Kat Folwer.

Release Date - Feb 1, 2021

Let's start with a review of the physical book. It is an oversized book. For folks with small hands, like mine this may be a challenge to take on the go.  It will take a larger size bookbag or backpack to take with you. It is a smooth paperback with a lovely smooth cover. The images on the outside and within are vibrant and beautiful. I loved looking at it. The font size is great! Easy to read, even for these old eyes and I found it to be easily read from contents page to index without issue.

The book is broken down into three parts.  The Basics, The Preparation and Energy Healing Techniques & Exercises. The beginning includes a guide for using the book and an opening meditation which was really nice. I found the direction to be helpful and purposeful. Something that I think most of these types of book miss before delving into the book.

I found the sections on understanding your anatomy and the break down of each Chakra to be very informative. I think that many begin this type of healing with out fully understanding the process of Chakra energy and how to work with it. Knowing where these points are located and how they interact with the Auric Field is critical for any real work in using healing energies. The author also takes us through tools to use for this work such as crystals, light, water and sacred geometry. Something I feel very connected to. Line art, and geometry have been looked at from a magical perspective for thousands of years. From indigenous tattoos to wall art, we can find examples of sacred geometry across cultures around the world.

Part two offers several exercises to prepare us to work with this energy for healing. From breathing meditations to setting up a sacred space, the author provides a step by step guide for getting the most out of this healing experience. I found the setting expectations section and the part on what to expect to be especially helpful for beginners.

Finally part three gives us the exercises to begin our healing experience. I found the visualization section to be one of the most beneficial. Understanding the white bubble of light and how to use it to create a safe space for yourself is something that can be used in a mindful way as well.  Think about all the times in the every day grind that you're pushed to the edge. Remembering that bubble and pulling yourself back inside when you need is a great way to refocus stress and anxiety in order to return to the now, and be able to go on with your day. Sometimes my bubble includes the following verse - "I'm walking, and I know I'm walking.  I'm sitting and I know I'm sitting.  Right now, I am sitting. Nothing else is happening right now.  Just sitting/walking"

The book continues with some more focused healing practices and a few to move you from beginner to intermediate to advanced. I was really in love with the section on the pendulum work. As one who connects greatly with earth energies and the magnetic pull on us, I can tell you that working with this energy will aid you in so many ways. This book has a step for you no matter which level of healing you are on.

Overall I think this is a great book to have on the shelf of any energy healer. It is easy to read and offers a number of exercises to help move you through your healing journey. I do recommend taking the time to check out this book.

Modern Divination - Crystals and Crystal Grids

Crystal healing has been around for centuries. My interest in crystals started as a small child looking for that "sparkle" amongst the common stones. Just last year I finished my crystal healer certification in 2018 and found that it was indeed not only a passion due to the beauty with in each piece but also because of the amazing power that emanates from each delicate facet of these stunning creations.

I remember my first crystal ball and the power I felt from it. I remember wearing my crystals of assorted types and remembering how they changed the world around me.  Wearing my amethyst ring for example lead to a higher bar tab. It was like the alcohol couldn't find me.

My clear quart giving me the power to feel centered and the ability to take on the world. My labradorite to clear energy and help me follow my dreams.

So what is a crystal grid and how does it work?  Crystal grids is an alignment of crystals set to a geometrical pattern for the purpose of manifestation. There is a center stone with is the focus of the energy and the surrounding stones that modify and broadcast the intention into the universe.  Amplification stones, generally quartz crystals are then used to "power up" the grid. Finally the grid is activated.  It is a pretty powerful process and if you have the opportunity to learn more I highly recommend checking it out. I have several posts in this blog related to crystals.  Here's a link for your convivence.

When I met Crystal online, I was drawn to her carefree and playful energy. We have known each other for quite a few years and I have worked with her on several occasions to create jewelry and clay creation from her earthen treasures.

I have always loved her crystal grids and when I thought of this project I knew I wanted to get her amazing grids in front of you.  I was thrilled when she agreed to participate.

Here are her interview questions.

Q: How did you get started?

A: I started digging quartz in Arkansas about a decade ago .I was amazed at how it feels to be the first person to touch these amazing gifts from earth.  I was researching what all  I could do with the crystals once I had dug them. I eventually tried a few grids and when I made one for my boss to win a fishing tournament (that failed) I revisited my intent and purpose in making the grids. I also moved to an area known for more mineral variety and my collection grew immensely. It allowed me to learn even more about our connection with earth.. I believe the crystals /grid components find us. They are a gift and should be used for positive intentions. Since then I've had great luck with every grid I've built.

Q: Explain your process for getting started with a reading.

A: Before gridding I like to set intentions, research needed materials, then ground and cleanse my work area energies.  I set my grid with intention then charge it.

Q: How does the information come to you?

A:  The information has always somewhat come intuitively. I sit quietly with all the different specimens I use. When I first started I read every book, I researched all over the web and I asked other healers for direction. I also meditated with different minerals to understand their energy. I can then use that information when charging the grid with my intentions.

I want to take a moment to thank Crystal for participating in our this exploration of divination via runes.  If you'd like to contact Crystal, please leave a comment on this blog and I'll see that she gets your message.

Monday Meditation - We Inter-Are

Another great thought from The Art of Living by Thich Nhat Hanh was something that really struck me.  He says in the book that we are "Inter-are".

We are connected to each other more than we really think.  Just as we cannot take the soil out of the flower or the sunlight out of the flower we cannot remove others from ourselves. If we tried to take the sun away, the flower is no longer a flower.  We cannot separate the water from a wave.  We see the wave, we see the flower.  The flower without the sun would not be a flower.  It took me a while to see that no matter how hard I tried to remove myself from my family, they are still there.  A part of me.
I have the choice to stop the suffering. I do not have to participate in the negativity of the daily grind. I can stop. I can breathe.  I can learn that we are all connected and we - inter-are.  This was a massive lesson for me. If you have the opportunity I highly recommend listening to Thich Nhat Hanh speak. I'll add another video at the bottom of this entry.

His poem gives a glimpse about what he means by we inter-are.

You are me, and I am you.
Isn’t it obvious that we “inter-are”?
You cultivate the flower in yourself,
so that I will be beautiful.
I transform the garbage in myself,
so that you will not have to suffer.
I support you;
you support me.
I am in this world to offer you peace;
you are in this world to bring me joy.  ~ by Thich Nhat Hanh (Link)

Monday Meditation: Witchcraft & Buddhism - The Fluffy Bunny Effect

I've become a fluffy bunny.  I look back at all the posts I used to make about my angry Goddess Hecate Brimo and how she was going to be a destroyer of all those who had wronged me. I

(artist Georgi Mishev)

I saw her riding in with her mighty torches, dagger in hand ready to bring forth justice for me. To in a sense destroy all those who were not aligned with my way of thinking. I saw this metaphorically. I followed Hecate as a light bringer. One who has the keys to ancient knowledge that I needed in order to go forward in my life. I was angry, so Brimo was who I identified with.

Today I'm feeling much more centered in my life. I don't practice as much as I used to, spells and rituals but I do meditate.  I feel that even if I'm not chanting her name I am still calling upon some of the other representations that she is know for. I love this list here.

Some new titles I'm thinking of identifying with:

Alkimos: Strong/Stout/Brave/Powerful
Ameibousa/Amibousa: One that Transforms
Angelos/Angele: Messenger
Aregos: Helper
Erototokeia: Producing Love/Bearer of Love
Eukoline: Good-Tempered

There are so many  more facets to this life we have in front of us. Learning to become more and not hold on to those things that cause suffering is something that we all need to learn. On the hunt for a fight, looking for someone to defend is just furthering suffering. Instead I choose to offer compassion. I choose to offer understanding and be there for those who need it. I choose to send out, light and love.  There I said it.  Light and love.  For all those years, I was quick to say, I'm not all light and love.  Well I know why. I was so full of suffering that I couldn't see the way to give that light and love to others, because I hadn't given it to myself.

Today I choose to love myself. Today I choose to be a fluffy bunny.

Happy 2020

It has been an amazing year.  Last year this time I was in New Mexico living on some property that we were considering buying. We were nearly committed when we had some issues with our property in NC that led us back here.  We ended up coming back to NC where we have been for 2019.

Photo Credit - Elijah Trent Olson

We took this year to see if we really wanted to be back in NM or if NC was where we could make our home.  We had ups and downs and took the time to really appreciate what NC has to offer. We reconnected with family members and learned that sometimes you just can't mend fences and you have to be ok with letting some people go.

We spent a year dedicated to learning about foods from Asia. We learned to use chopsticks and how to make sushi.  We learned as much as we could about different spices from that area of the world and traveled across the continent vicariously via our food adventures.  This next year we're going to explore Latin cuisine and we're learning Spanish!

We'll continue to share our recipes on Real Rations and as you can tell I renamed this blog and will continue to share my witchy book reviews, recipes and exploration in to all things wellness on To Live Whole.

In October I went to HexFest and had a wonderful time with Sorita d'Este. I explored some new foods and ended up adding mushrooms, peppers and onions to our dietary guidelines!

Eli and I found Buddhism and began meditating. We are really feeling good now. Eli is down to almost no pain at all and all my manias have passed.  I have completely migrated into menopause and feel healthier than I have in my entire life.

So we're ready now.  Come on 2020 - Let's get this party started.

Generally I like to start out with a disclaimer. I am an atheist witch.  I look for the connection between magic and science without the need for a deity. I receive no compensation for these reviews and all my links are standard Amazon links and not affiliate links. I am a practicing photo reader and have spent the last 15 years honing my craft.  I offer personal readings by request and have a strong online history that boasts nearly 400,000 views.

As with my other reviews we're going to start with a review of the physical book.  First, I love the size of this book.  It is large enough that the font size isn't an issue, but small enough I can toss into a handbag or backpack for on the go reading. I was sent a hardcover to review.  The cover is a brilliant purple and teal blue. The colors soothing and the cover smooth to the touch without going over into that suede feel that drives me insane.  This book has a very small index. With a total page count of 176 I would expect that.  I do miss a detailed index in any book, especially one whose title claims to be the handbook on a particular subject.  Unlike some other books I have read, this book offers a "purpose" if you will, in the prologue that tells us exactly what to expect from the book.  The pages are smooth, with a aligned page edge and brilliant photos.  The images in this book are simply amazing. I love the connection with each chapter to the color and explanation of the chakra represented.  Over all the physical presentation of this book is stellar.

Getting into the root (pun intended) of the book, each chapter is broken down by sections related to a definition of the chakra, a table of correspondences as well as gemstones, essential oils and herbs related to that chakra.  I'm going to look at the third eye chakra as that has been my focus over the last few months.

The author begins to explain the third eye to us on page 118.  They explain the chakra itself and then explain what we experience when that chakra is blocked.  For example if your third eye chakra is blocked you may feel unclear, unfocused, and unable to sense what is happening around you.  A clear third eye chakra would have you feeling you see the world in full vibrant colors. All of your senses are available and are sources of wisdom and information.

I was hit with a jolt when I saw that Hecate is associated with this chakra. While a modern connection, none the less it was an eye opener for me as I spend so much of my time working on divination and offering assistance for those at the threshold or crossroads, if you will, in their current life situations. With the author providing background on this connection I was not surprised to see several of the herbs, stones and crystals associated with Hecate to also be included in opening up or awakening this chakra.

The author tells us that Lapis Lazuli, Labradorite and Sodalite are all used to focus, open and strengthen the third eye chakra. The Labradorite looks to ignite the imagination while the Lapis Lazuli build confidence and self-esteem. Sodalite, the dream-catcher Stone is said to prevent nightmares and night terrors.  It helps release our fears and stay present and focused on the moment.  The author also includes references to herbs and oils to build focus and includes anointing oil blends at the end of the chapters.

Over all this book is a valuable resource to those interested in getting started with the Chakras. It is easy to read and offers vibrant images to keep your interest.  The recipes are easy to follow and provided you have a basic witch's pantry, pretty easy to replicate. I did see a few rare oils mentioned but with a little investigation, these can be replaced with more readily available alternatives.

This is a good resource for those beginning research in chakras and I do recommend this for your healing library.

The Kyballion - Lost to Me - Witchy Wednesday

So over the last three weeks I have been working with learning the principals of the Kybalion. I have tried several different methods. I started out reading a book and boy was that a mess.  I tried to listen to it via audio books.  You can find a chapter by chapter listing here.

Pretty soon I began to feel like I was in a Charlie Brown cartoon.

Next I found several different "teachers" if you will on YouTube to try to understand the message here.  Here is just a few of the thousands of hits that were returned on this search.

While I intended this blog series to outline the seven principals and then give my interpretation of them, the best I have right now is:

I just don't get it.  Maybe it is smarter than me, maybe I'm not at my spiritual level to fully understand this but for now, it is complete confusion.  And frankly I really tried to get it. If anyone would like to reach out to add a bit of clarity I am completely open to hearing your thoughts on this but for now, I'm just setting this aside.

My path has pretty much wondered away from deity worship and leads back more towards science, energy and learning about alchemy. Perhaps this is why I'm having issues with it. The repeated references to God and so forth are a bit of challenge for me.

In any event those following at home, please feel free to have a hand at reading this and feel free to come back and post your comments or even message me directly.  I'm intrigued at how many have re-shared, re-blogged and vlogged about this topic yet it is still so difficult to understand.

After having a listen to these things I finally found this video.  Not related to our topic but really actually higher than our topic.  The statement - everyone consumes more than what they need.  YES. This.  To me this is so much more understanding than these other videos.

Till next time...
Sosanna

Witchy Wednesday - Owning Your Energy

So many times we walk around in this world allowing our energy to run a muck.

We forget that when we send out certain types of energy we attract certain types back to us.  You've heard the old saying misery loves company? Well if you walk around the world miserable eventually you'll find someone to join in your misery and soon all that you'll have around you is negativity.

Ever had a day (week, month or year) that just seemed to be filled with issue after issue? One "bad" thing after another happening to you?  Check your energy. What are you putting out there?  Are you a gloomy Gus?  Are you a negative Nancy?  Yeah I said that.

The great thing at this point is that you see that pattern. You can recognize that you need to take control of the space you're in and the energy you bring into that space. Learning some simple techniques you'll be able to remove that negativity and bring back some prosperity into your world.

Here is a really good info video on Smudging.

If you really want to get an in-depth course. Head over to Tree of Life Apothecary's Etsy shop and pick up Sage Advice.  I highly recommend it.

The main way to get yourself together and JUST DO IT.

All joking aside, I see so many magical people sitting back and letting the world happen to them. You have to take control of the situation and take steps to improve or direct your energy to the correct avenue.  If you want to learn a new spell, pick up a book and dedicate some time to learning it. If you want to stop those nasty little accidents from occurring around your house, take a few minutes and cleanse your space.  You control this space.  You can "allow" it to continue to ruled by negativity or you can "allow" positive, prosperous and happy energy to live there.   It is all up to you.

Sing and dance with me ya'll.

Witchy Wednesday - Practice Self Care

Good Morning!  Happy Wednesday.  This week I want to talk about a ritual that many of us (not just witches) forget about.  We spend our days creating, working, caring for others and we often neglect our own self care.  We don't see it as an important part of witchcraft, which actually just fascinates me. Our bodies, our minds and our energy are the main components of a spell. Anyone can buy a candle.  Anyone can toss together some herbs, but your clients come to you. They have access to the same herbal shops that you do.  They have access to the same candle suppliers.  But still your inbox is at capacity with requests for your touch.  Your hand.  Your magic.

Created by Renee Sosanna Olson

Why do they come to you? Many times I am told I am abrasive.  I am militant in my support of LGBTQI. I am hated for telling the truth.  I am ridiculed for not toeing the line, yet my readings are always requested and my protection amulets, healing and defensive pieces fly off the shelves. Why is that?  Why am I not laid up with maladies and suffering from shortages of money or supplies?

I can tell you why.

I believe that each of us has a duty to create a space that allows ourselves to flourish. We need to be the force that creates this magic. We can only do this by caring for ourselves as we care for others. Now, that doesn't mean if you don't get two shits about yourself and you treat others the same that you're going to be successful.  That isn't how it works. I believe that when you take care of yourself, which I will define later, you open your body and mind up as a conduit for positive energy. Success finds you.  And to care for yourself means not only taking time to reset, but also to recharge your spirit. Take a walk in the woods, go sit the by the river. Read a book. Any action that takes you to a place of happiness.  That is what we want to replicate in the world.

Created by Renee Sosanna Olson

I believe that I always have the money I need when I need it because I give of it so freely when I have extra. I believe that magic finds me because I give magic to others when I can.  I go the extra step to support friends who are suffering or offer a hand when someone is in need.  The universe sees that and sends those same things back to me when I need it.

When people wag their jaws and gossip about me, it only enhances my success. When they continue to attack me, I flourish. If you find yourself saying things like:

"Why does this always happen to me?"
"Why don't have I have any good luck?"
"Just my luck, failed again!"

Take a moment to do a real inventory of what you're sending out into the world. What energy are you putting out there? How is that energy coming home?  Now I know what you're thinking, The Rule of Three, well, yeah maybe, kinda... OK not really.  Yes, I do believe that what you send out comes home. I do believe that if you meddle with others there is the chance that a big whopping rude awakening could be in store for you.  But I also believe that sometimes, shit happens and how you respond to that shit is determine what else shows its ugly head.

Created by Renee Sosanna Olson

So what do you do?  What is self care and how do you do it?  Well, as I mentioned earlier, you can take a walk.  Go for a run.  Have a bath.  Do any of the things that help you feel more connected to yourself.  You have the power within you to create a recharging station where ever you are. Take that time and get yourself back up to 100% before taking on any additional projects or work.

You'll be better for others and for yourself in the long run.

Ritutal vs. Belief

In order to get more money in my life, I take a green candle and cleans it by the light of the full moon. I carve my desire to have more money on the candle and after calling the Guardians I light my candle and meditate on what I want to happen. Each time I see the candle burning it reminds me that I need to focus on work/task/chores that bring this "magic" to fruition.

So, let's say I change the candle color and I complete all the exact same steps. Will my "magic" fail to work? How about if I fail to cleanse my candle in the light of the full moon? How about if I forget to write "money" on the candle? How much can I leave out before my "magic" fails?

There's only one thing that you can leave out of this magical spell that will change the outcome of the spell. That is you. You are the power behind the spell. You are the magic. The other items are tools that remind you. Tools that focus you. Tools that lead you to the end result. The candle cannot produce this magic alone. There will only be silence if you are not there to address the energies of time and space to pull your magic out. You are the power.

Finding your magic is like connecting to a great pool of energy outside the conscious realm. You can go back and access this energy pool and pull it into your life at any time. You are the one with the power. Using your mind you can center yourself and send out this power to others around you.

Sit back, close your eyes and think about your body. Focus on the chakra points in your body, see them swirling around and feel them being energized from that great pool of energy. Feel it moving across your body and accept that you have the power to allow that energy to flow through your body and mind and cleanse it of items that would block its ability to flow easily.

This is the choice. Belief or Ritual. You can believe you have the power to do this,or you can follow the ritual, keep lighting that green candle in hopes that money will arrive. You can visulize the completed "spell" or you can dwell on the journey to find the correct herb. You can enjoy the benefit of having this centered energy, this completed magical source of power that comes from within or you can sit and wonder if this candle is ever going to work.

I for one, plan to reach for the prior.

Just for today, I will not be worry
Just for today, I will not be angry
Just for today, I will work honestly
Just for today, I will be thankful for my blessings
Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

Namaste
&
Blessed Be
