Sound Therapy - Childhood & Science

Sound therapy has been around for decades.  I began working with sound for soothing while I was a teenager. I found an old cassette tape next to the road while walking to the store.  Our family was very poor and I did not have these types of things available to me on a daily basis.  The tape was pulled out of the cassette and looked to have been tossed from a car window.

I took that tape and wound it back together and was able to lay in my bed at night with an old cassette player under my pillow and played the tape over and over. I learned every word of the song, and used it to keep me safe in a home where there was no safety or sense of self.

Even earlier than that, as a small child, my parents would send me down to my grandmother's house to get this or that. It was a long dark dirt path to their house.  Fields of corn on each side, gently rustling in the breeze. The sounds brought visions of monsters walking in the corn while I made my way down the road.  I used to sing songs to the corn and to the energy around it to keep me safe.  I attribute my safe arrival to Charlie Pride and his song, the Snakes Crawl at Night.  This was a child's belief that when things were at play, they were not dangerous.

Moving forward, my love for music and the sense of protection it provided to me was instrumental in my desire to learn music. And is of course why I have a plethora of instruments in my home today.  My love of music is only outweighed by my equal love of science. I recall wanting to be a scientist throughout many parts of my childhood. I always wanted to know why and frequently took things apart to see how they worked.

Sound has been used to heal for centuries in human society. We know that many tribal cultures connected the sound of the drum to the heartbeat of the earth and it was used in ceremonies for dance and pleasure as well as in ritual healing, cleansing as well as the welcoming of new life and departing of those who passed.

When looking into those who have studied this field, even though this thought process is as old as we are the official study of it is relatively new. Even on YouTube there are those who will go into detail to explain the exact science around this practice.

One way to visualize sound healing is to look at sand bouncing on a metal plate next to a speaker. Or watch the ripples in water, when sound is played into it.  We, being over 70% water react much in the same way but on a cellular level.  Dr. Emoto, a leading scientist in this field demonstrated the effects of playing sound (positive/negative) on water and then freezing it, led to some remarkable findings.

This fascinates me. As I move forward on my sound journey, I am finding so much in this that resonates (pun intended) with me. I hope you are too.

Generally I like to start out with a disclaimer. I am an contemporary witch.  I look for the connection between magic and science without the need to search for a creator. I receive no compensation for these reviews and all my links are standard Amazon links and not affiliate links. I am a practicing photo reader and have spent the last 16 years honing my craft.  I offer personal readings by request and have a strong online history that boasts nearly 400,000 views.

I'll being with a review of the physical book.  Overall a good sized book to toss in a bag or backpack for reading on the go.  The cover is vibrant and colorful.  The book includes a set of oversize cards in an envelope in the back cover that review the principals of Reiki.  Over the years my work with Reiki, I have always kept a copy of the principals near where I can see them each day.  Even if you do not work with Reiki, I find these to be a way to lift the spirit and help you manage a stressful day.

This book is dedicated to healing and after the brief introduction at the beginning the author delves directly into getting the reader up to speed on its fundamental use for this practice.  Each chapter address specific areas of focus such as Common Causes of Illness as the very first chapter and then broadens into understand self healing from the physical to the spiritual realm.

Chapter four takes us directly into self healing. I mean we can't love anyone else if we can't love ourselves, right?

While providing the steps for us to work to find the KI within ourselves this book offers meditations, mantras as well as tips and tricks to keep us on track in our Reiki practice.  The author even provides personal stories called out to help us understand the process and fully come into our own as Reiki practitioners.

The chapter on healing others includes detailed illustrations to show exactly where each position would be and how we should be providing the connection to our clients be they adult, children or our furry friends.  The principals of Reiki are amazing to me.  I love the fact that we only deal in the here and the now.  Just for today, I will let go of anger.  We're not worried about the past, the past is gone. We're not worried about the future, it isn't here yet.  Just for right now, right now I will let go of worry.  We can bring these principals into all aspects of our lives as we even address doing our work honestly, just for today.   While all are important the fifth, resonates with me on a personal level.  Today I will be kind to every living creature.  To me this speaks directly to not only the pets I have in my home but to what food I eat or what car I drive.  I am vegan so I do my best not to harm any living creatures to the best of my ability.  After all, how can you have a calm, centered life, if you are feeding on the suffering of others.  No matter how big or small those others might be.

The author continues with sections dedicated to the chakras and auras leading directly into angles and guides. While maybe not the go to for everyone, I found these sections to be highly enlightening and worth the time to read, even if you do not agree with specific language of the text.  For example, some may not wish to work with angels due to their Christian influence however, I do not believe that it is necessary to always associate angels with a specific religion or deity.

This book is filled with grids, inspirational quotes and antidotes as well as direct process for cleansing auras.  Overall this is a great book for the beginner and offers some new ways of looking at Reiki for the seasoned pro. The addition of the cards in the back are a great way to focus on specific principals at a glance and still benefit from the authors experience with the subject.

I'm going to begin with a review of the physical book.  My copy was a hard cover copy without a dust jacket that includes an 18 x 24 inch Chakra wall chart.  It is colorful and informative.  It tucks nicely into an envelope in the back of the book.  The cover is bright yellow with a dark black text that bounces off the cover.  The print is slightly raised giving a nice feel to the book when held.  It is a bit larger than some books but not too large to be tossed into a bag or backpack for reading on the go.  This is the third or fourth book I have reviewed as part of the In Focus collection from Quarto Knows and I found this to be a very good quality book and an easy read.

The chapters are broken down into sections that review what the Chakras are and how they are divided with a chapter dedicated to the major and minor chakras alike. I found the chapter on identifying the weak chakra to be extremely beneficial. It reads like a troubleshooting guide for what ails you.  Quick, to the point and direct about which chakras you need to work with when dealing with issues like spiritual deference, the lymphatic system and even income and money.

Chapter seven talks about using crystals for healing the Chakras.  One of my favorite topics. This section has tips and tricks as well as some pretty good images related to setting up your crystals and selecting the correct crystal for specific issues. The chart on page 102 is great for a chakra crystal at a glance.  I could see this being a great reference for current practitioners and beginners alike.

Unlike many Chakra books I have reviewed, this book offers a chapter on magical techniques for working with the chakras. Basic altar discussion, candles, colors and meditations are provided. I was pleased to see that this book also included a section, although brief, on our furry friends as well.

Overall this is a great book to have in your Chakra library and I highly recommend.
