Spring

I'm doing a bit of self examination lately. Our world is not the same place it was 3 months ago. My biggest concern then was related to our house and when to schedule my next vacation. I was focused on getting myself ready for a possible move to a new location and opening up new opportunities for our future.

Today we're actually talking about rationing items and not going out in public due to this virus.  The interesting thing is that I actually more worried about how other people are going to respond to this new stress more so than the actual virus itself.  I'm not saying or down playing the virus by any means. This is a very serious situation. I still see people on social media yelling that its a hoax or trying to turn it into a political issue. We need to really focus on what this is doing to our humanity.

Simple things such as supply chains seem to be totally foreign to the general public. If everyone went out at any time (virus or no) and purchased all of a specific product, that product would be scarce. Then it becomes a cycle. Because no one can get it, the next that comes in flies off the shelves and then it just repeats itself.  Panic buying leads to scarcity, which leads to more panic. Hoarding is something we as a society look at as being a negative, yet when billionaires hoard the nations wealth we call them successful.

As the blossoms on the trees begin to open up and the bees are flying about, take a moment to think about what you want to bring into this world today. What do you want to put out there.  I'm leaning towards sharing some happiness and positive energy.  I want those without to have what they need. I want those with to share what they can. I want those who need it, to realize happiness in there within them. Together we can move forward and make this world a better place. We have all that we need within us. We just need to open up and see it.

Wishing you a fruitful spring.

Witchy Wednesday - Practical Magical Flowers

No walk through a witch's yard would be complete without the witch's garden.  Some put rosemary by the garden gate, some do so much more.  There is much more to magic than just spells.  There is an energy around it. Bring some color into your life and and music.  After all witches just wanna have fun.

Here's a few of my favorite garden flowers and their magical properties. (Properties sourced from witcheslore.com)

1. Azalea (temperance – passion – womanhood – fragility)

2. Daisy – (feelings shared – innocence – purity – beauty – simplicity – loyalty – love) also known as (“flowery mead”)

How can we reference gardens, flowers, fun and Practical Magic without Midnight Margaritas!

...and sometimes we just add certain flowers to our garden because we have a personal connection with them.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Macro Spring - A Witch's View

Here it is, the middle of February and I have my windows open.  I have on a short sleeve shirt and am outside taking photos of my budding plants.  The weather certainly has gone a bit haywire from just a few years ago.  We're expected to reach 79 degrees today.  Unseasonably warm for eastern North Carolina.  But, far be it from me to look a gift horse in the mouth. So I went out side with my new macro lens to test out some close ups with my camera.  Here's what I ended up with.

Meatless Monday - Thai Spring Rolls

As a compliment to my Pad Thai Noodles I came up with this great recipe for Thai Spring Rolls.  I started out trying this recipe with the rice paper wrappers.  I had a lot of trouble with them.  After frying them there was a film left on my teeth which was quite bad.  I decided to redo the recipe and remove the rice wrappers for egg roll wrappers.

* This website has a great list of vegetarian substitutions

Here are my ingredients
1 cup of sliced dried black mushrooms

2 tablespoons Oyster sauce
9-12 spring roll wrappers (I use egg roll wrappers)
3 teaspoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons sliced carrots
2 tablespoons sliced Napa cabbage

Sauce
4 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
5 tablespoons White Sugar
¼ teaspoon red pepper flake

Add one tablespoon of oil, one tablespoon of oyster sauce and two teaspoons of soy sauce and cook over high heat for five minutes.  Use the mushroom water to add moisture to the mushrooms until the cooking time is complete to keep moist.  Remove from heat.

In another pan add 1 tablespoon oil, carrots, cabbage and garlic on high heat until fragrant, and then add the mushroom mixture, the drained noodles and rest of sauce.  Cook for 3-5 minutes or until the noodles are done.

Pagan Blog Project 2013 - H is for Hecate

Hecate is a sometimes called a Greco-Roman Goddess, though she predates this era.  She is said to be the key bearer to the underworld.  Granted dominion over the heavens, the earth and the seas; she is associated with fire, light, moon, magic and witchcraft.  She is considered a goddess to the midwife and with the magic of necromancy.  Sometimes called the Goddess of the Witches, Hecate is often depicted as a triple form goddess.  Though tagged as the Crone by Aleister Crowley, Hecate is certainly represented by each stage of the Goddess including maiden and mother.

In Mythology, Hecate, a Titan was favored by Zeus before all others and granted dominion over the Earth, Heavens and seas.  Hesiod referred to her as the only daughter of Perses and Asteria.  One of the more popular and my favorite Myth involving Hecate is the abduction of Persephone.
The story goes; Persephone was abducted by the God of the Underworld – Hades, while she was out collecting flowers.  Demeter searched to find her daughter.   While she looked her sadness caused the world to fall into state where nothing could grow.   Hecate assisted Demeter by telling her that Helios, the Sun God sees everything and he should know what happened to Persephone.

It wasn't until after Persephone was tricked into eating pomegranate seeds that she was found.  It was the rule of the Fates that if someone consumed food or drink in the Underworld, they had to stay there for all eternity.  A deal was made with the distraught Demeter that allowed Persephone to spend four months in the Underworld with Hades, and the rest of the time with her mother.  This is where the winter season comes from.  In her sadness for her missing daughter, Demeter mourns and nothing can grow on the Earth until she returns in the spring.

Hecate is the Goddess of the Crossroads.  It is thought that offerings made to her should be placed at a three way intersection.  Garlic, honey, mushrooms and eggs are placed with a flame.  The plate is left and it is said that one should walk away without looking back.  Hecate will decide who gets what is left for her and at times, it was thought that she fed the homeless and needy with her offerings.  The torch, the dog, the key and the dagger are often found in her representations.
The willow and the yew tree are sacred to Hecate.  Black dogs are also associated with Hecate.  Being the Goddess of Witchcraft and necromancy, Hecate is often called upon to assist those traveling from the land of the living to the Underworld.  Many see her as the guardian to the Underworld and the holder of the key to the gates there.  Because of this association many call upon Hecate in their workings with the dead.

Typically held on the 13th of each month, Hecate’s supper is a ritual where eggs, fish, garlic, mushrooms and honey are left at a cross roads in her honor.  The Night of Hecate is November 16, while the Day of Hecate is considered November 30th.  Modern festivals include an event held on the full moon in May called the Rite of her SacredFires, where Hecateans around the world participate in a ritual to honor the Goddess.

For many years I considered myself Wiccan and had no particular deity.  After working with Christian Day’s “The Witch’s Book of the Dead”, I began to research Hecate and found a connection with her.  I completed my dedication in January 2012 and now work my circles and rituals in her honor.

I've created a Shrine to Hecate on my blog found here and much of my published work around Hecate can be found in the quarterly publication called Askei Kataskei available for free download here.  I also have a board on Pinterest dedicated to locating images of the Goddess Hecate.

I spend a lot of time working with clay and created this piece below for Hecate.
