Passion Pie Cafe - A Reivew

Went to a new place this week called Passion Pie Cafe.
(Facebook)

Really cute place with pretty good food. Tasted clean even though some are a bit decadent. Hubby tried the Elvis (won't get that again because wow talk about sweet) and I had the falafel.  It was really good. Had a nice spice to it.  We will definitely be back. I won't have the coffee though, I could taste the cup.  But over all nice place.  Here's some photos.

A Witch's View - Blue Apron Review - Falafel Pitas

Today I'm reviewing another Blue Apron dish for A Witch's View.  We're looking at Falafel Pitas with Roasted Sweet Potato & Yogurt Sauce. Blue Apron offers fresh non-GMO, sustainable seafood and meats with no hormones or antibiotics.  They don't however, offer dairy free.  That is why ultimately I switched from Blue Apron to GreenChef.  Over the next 3 weeks, I'll share my meals that I picked up from there and compare them to Blue Apron.

Everything comes in the exact measurements that you need to complete the dish.  Before you freak out about waste, Blue Apron offers a recycling program.

So far this was my favorite dish from Blue Apron.  I'm a huge Falafel fan but usually eat it drenched in Tzatziki sauce. Since switching to vegan, I have not found a really great way to make the sauce and have since given up on my falafel.  Until now!  This was a really great dish.  Because Blue Apron does not offer dairy free options, I had to use my own yogurt for this dish.  I used So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt instead of the Greek Yogurt that came with the basket.

I started out by draining and washing the chickpeas and washing/peeling the veggies. Mise en place!

Next I sliced the sweet potatoes thin and got those in the oven with just a little olive oil and salt and pepper.

While they were roasting I added the garlic, dates and sauce to the chick pea mixture and pan fried those until they were golden on each side.

After the potatoes were finished cooking I added them to the salad, the shallots and the sauce.

Next was assembly.  I put all the yummy goodness into the warmed pita bread and it was divine.   The sweet potato and the arugula was fantastic.  The bite of date mixed with the falafel spices was simply amazing.  This is one of my favorite dishes.   I hate arugula.  Hate.  I had never had a date until today.  The combination was amazing.  I highly recommend this dish.

Even my hubby who HATES falafel (How is that even possible?) loved this meal.  We were very pleased with this one.  Go Blue Apron!

Next week I'll be switching companies and doing reviews for GreenChef.  Stay tuned!

Meatless Monday - Falafel

The majority of my life I was exposed only to “southern cooking”.  I had never tried any other food types until I was in my twenties.  The most exotic thing I had ever tried was General Tso’s Chicken at the local buffet.

When I moved to California, my culinary life bombarded with all sorts of new and exciting dishes.  I tried cuisines from all around the world.  Japan, France, Taiwan and India were the new exotic destinations on my journey.  When I saw some of the names, Hummus and Falafel for example my brain screamed, “DON’T EAT THAT!”

I’m so glad I didn't listen.  I've moved back to North Carolina now and the closest real Falafel to me is an hour away.  So I have to sometimes break my “no processed foods” rule and pick up a pack of falafel from the store.  Veggie Patch makes a great Falafel that you just pop in the oven and heat through.

So what is Falafel anyway?
A falafel is a deep-fried (yep stole my southern heart) ball made from ground chickpeas served usually in a pita topped with greens and sauce and is from the Middle East.

Here’s my variation on the dish

Sometimes when I don’t have pita, I’ll use a tortilla instead; warm the bread you’ll be using.

I go ahead and pop the falafel  in the oven while making the sauce.

I use about a 1/3 of a cucumber chopped finely and add it to my Greek yogurt as well as my dill.

Instead of lettuce I use spinach; it’s much better for you than lettuce. Plus a bit of tomato.

Assemble!

Finally add the falafel and enjoy!

What new foods have you tried that you were first afraid of and now love??

Aladdin's Eatery - Raleigh

Finding new and interesting places to eat can sometimes be a challenge. This weekend I was prompted to try a new restaurant by Groupon. Groupon is a way of sharing savings or deals with people via email by signing up for discounts in your area. Emails are then sent with updates on what businesses are offering deals. This deal offers $15 dollars worth of food at Aladdin’s Eatery for only $7. At time of this writing this deal was still available. 8 hours remain in the purchase time 1,548 actually purchased this discount and based on my experience there it’s TOTALLY worth it.

Aladdin’s Eatery has amazing décor. The inside is warm and friendly. The colors are amazing. I was greeted by wonderful wait staff that seated us quickly. We were escorted to our table passing by an amazing dessert case.

This wonderful restaurant boasts of nothing Pre-Packaged, multiple vegetarian options with fruit that is fresh and not frozen. They have dine, carryout and catering available.

If you leave Aladdin’s eatery hungry you have no one to blame but yourself. The portions are HUGE and the prices extremely reasonable.

My dinner guest ordered Aladdin’s Lamb Rolled with a side salad. The salad was huge; it had lots of lettuce feta cheese and a nice vinegar dressing with chopped tomatoes and onions. The “roll” was about a foot long pita and was packed with lots of lamb, lettuce, turnips, pickles and tahini sauce.

I ordered the Falaffel Pocket. This thing was gigantic. It was a full dinner size salad stuffed into a huge pita with vegetarian patties made from chick peas, fava beans, parsley and scallions. They are fried in peanut oil and served with tahini yogurt sauce. It was absolutely amazing. I love falafel and have tried it in many locations around the state. This was by far one of the best I’ve had.

Over all a complete success! If you’re looking for a new dining experience I highly recommend visiting Aladdin’s Eatery at Briar Creek.

Happy Eating!

The Fantastic Falafel Fiasco - PTO

Continuing in my line of PTO documentation I wanted to tell everyone about my PTO Day. This past Friday I took PTO for our Yard Sale. We had a ton and I mean a ton (hubby says... no it's not a ton!) of stuff that we have acquired over the last 5 years and it was time for some Spring cleaning!

After the yard sale was over, hubby and I checked out Craig's list and happen to find a Wood Stove for sale for 150.00. Awesome deal because we had expected to pay about 350/400 for the main part of the stove. I called the guy and found out the stove was in Timberlake. That's a good 2-3 hours from us. While chatting with the guy he said, heck you're coming from that far I'll let you have it for 125.00. Needless to say my ability to resist a great deal has never been fantastic so off we went to Timberlake.

Testing out the new GPS ability on my phone we decided that we would locate some Falafel for me. I found the address to Baba Ghannouj Mediterranean Bistro Good Falafel, bad directions... we road around in circles back and forwards and when I called the place they said.... OH you went to the new Harris Teeter we're in the old Harris Teeter shopping center. DANG! I forgot to check, ignore the new Harris Teeter on my GPS apparently! LOL

Saturday we got up and headed to Out Raliegh festival. After being annoyed at the lack of gender correct contact we decided to leave and go find something to eat. On a side note, the protesters were there in force with their megaphones and spouting their hate, nothing new right? Right down from the kids face-painting and play area. Nice.. Real Jesus Like. UGH

So back to the food... What did I want? Falafel. Again, we plugged in Falafel into the GPS and started on the trip. We found Jasmin Mediterranean Bistro. Good Falafel, good baklava unfortunately it was right across the street from my arch nemesis NC State University. I had to eat quickly before they recognized the Tarheel Blue Blood running through my veins (GO TARHEELS). I scampered off to the Dancing Moon Shop before heading back to Seven Springs.

After arriving home and putting on my shorts and getting relaxed, hubby comes in and says, I want a boxer puppy. We searched on the different pet lists and stuff to find him a boxer. He loves boxers and we're in a position where we can possibly start raising them again. So what the heck! We found one! She was perfect! I called and she was still available. She was however in Monroe NC. Near CHARLOTTE! Holy Crap 3 hours away!

We grabbed the crackers and peanuts along with the bottled water and headed out. After about an hour or so hubby said, what do you want for dinner. He said pizza? He said tacos? I said... Falafel. He looked at me and laughed and said, ok fine, find one out here. All I saw was trees. I started messing with the GPS and tried to find a Falafel. Nothing was coming up. Finally I said, fine, get what you want! (Pouting) We drove past a strip mall and I saw in a flash, Sahara - Chicken Schwarma.... I said honey honey stop there's a place that might have it! Sure enough my Hero exits the store with a small white bag of happiness for me. ARG! Onions! I had to pick all the onions off... and they used flatbread instead of pita... but over all, it hit the spot.

So, out of all the places we went to the best Falafel in NC is right here at home. Nothing beats hubby's Falafel!
