Pagan Blog Project 2012 - Y is for Yggdrasil

In Norse mythology, there is a giant ash tree, Yggdrasil, supporting the universe.  This tree roots travel from the underworld, Niflheim into the land of the giants, Jotunheim and a third into the Gods home, Asgard.

Urdarbrunnr or the Well of Fate, Mimibrunnr or Well of Wisdom and Hvergelmir or Roaring Kettle.  These three wells at the bottom was said to give the knowledge of Odin.  It is said that Odin gave one of his eyes for this knowledge.

Sometimes depicted as a tree with large branches and roots that mirror them, Yggdrasil is often used in pendants and tattoos.  I’ve seen it with the words of the Wiccan rede around it and “As above so below”.

This is Yggdrasill, the World Tree, Tree of Life or Laerad.

Within the tree four deer live in the branches and eat the buds representing the four winds.  Also in the tree is a snake (Vidofnir) a rooster and a squirrel (Ratatosk) noted for gossip. The roots of the tree are chewed upon by Nidhogg.

In the myth, demons are trying to destroy Yggdrasil this represents the constant power struggle between good and evil.

On the day of Ragnarok, or the end of the world, a fire giant named Surt will send fire in all directions and the nine worlds held up by Yggdrail will burn causing the earth to fall into the sea.

I had read this several years ago and even played an online role playing game that referenced this story.  We always had to get back to the tree!

NaBloWriMo - Talented Tuesday 5 - My Hunny

I got so wrapped up in the dealing with the hurricane, working on getting ready for ShadowHarvest this weekend and dealing with life in general that I nearly missed today's post.

Today's post is going to be about my hunny.  Elijah, is a wonderful partner and friend.   Tomorrow is our 10 year wedding anniversary.  Over the years he's probably the most talented person I've ever met.

First he's an amazing chef.  He makes bread from scratch.  He bakes me brownies, without a box! I know right!!  I was amazed.  He even makes me Curry and Korma!

He's a wonderful artist.  I have several tattoos from him.

He's a wonderful tailor and often makes me corsets!

He built my Hecate Altar, including a triple Goddess carving at the top!

After ten years you'd think I'd be out of surprises from him, but NO NO NO this last week I've learned that he has two other very special talents.

First he can make braided hemp necklaces.  WHAT?  Yes you heard me.  Look!

After all these years he still surprises and inspires me.  I adore him.

NaBloWriMo - Monday Memories 2

For Monday Memories part 1 I posted pictures of the past year, the relationships I've lost or people I've lost over the years.  Today I'm going to focus on my best friend.

Ten years ago I met an amazing person. We've been though so much together.  We've transitioned into new people, but yet at our core still the very same.  We've fought joblessness and celebrated in amazing rewards.  We've watched as our daughter moved from High School through an advanced studies degree.

From our very first photo as a couple...

To our coming together as a family...

We have grown so much.  This is my life, my soul mate, my hero.

I adore you.
